PC won't recognize the iHP-140 anymore
Hell,
after a couple of months of use and transferring 562 folders and 4171 songs my PC (windows XP) suddenly doesn't recognize my iHP anymore. The screen on my iHP says it's connected, but the drive doesn't show in my pc. Any ideas???

It may sound stupid, but make sure in this case you restart Explorer every time you connect it up. My only suggestion, at the moment.

Could it be a broken lead?
When wiring up my dock I discovered that the USB port on the iHP-140 required the two data lines and the +5v line to be connected (it doesn't seem to care about the 0v line, unless the shielding/ground line which I also wired acts as 0v). When the +5v line is connected the iHP goes into connection mode as it thinks it's connected to a computer, but if the two data lines aren't connected then the computer can't see the iHP. |

Actually, come to recall, I USED TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM!!! I remember now. I would connect it and my computer wouldn't recegnize it (running XP). If I typed in the drive letter that it usually showed up as in Explorer, I could get it to see it, but I couldn't transfer any file that had over a 12 (+ or -) character limit because windows would change it and shorten it down. The only way I could get it to work was to: 1: Turn on iHP 2: Plug in iHP 3: Log off of Windows 4: Log back on 5:Then it finally showed up under 'My Computer' and I could transfer files normally without Explorer trying to change the file name. Another thing that worked for me was to turn on the player, plug it in, then turn on my computer and have it boot up with it plugged in and then it would be recognized. I'm not sure what causes it, so I just formatted my Comp and did a clean install of XP (it was about that time anyway). Now my connections are fine. It was weird for a few weeks though and very discouraging. Hopefully this helps, good luck.

Another option is to plug your iHP140 into another USB port - this should force windows to install the Generic USB Storage Driver (C:\Windows\inf\usbs tor.inf) against the different port (or for you non-geeks / Sun readers out there, reinstalls your iRiver...)

It could also be, that you downloaded different drivers. When i plugged my iHP-120 into my "secondary" old pc, it said it didnt have the right drivers. It shows up as connected, but you cant see it in Windows Explorer or My Computer.

I had this problem when I had a slow boot time(1 minute 20 seconds) I then created folders for every artist and boot time went to about 12 seconds.
It could be the USB bus is timing out. With the fast boot I can disconnect/reconnect at will, and the OS sees it. Tested with both XP Pro and 2000 Pro. |

Golly... don't we all love Windows. I had the same problem for a different reason than any of the above... so here was mine.
My iRiver always mapped to the E drive... then one day I had bound the E to another device I was using, and ran into your problem. I would connect it, and it would say it was connected, and I couldn't access it. Windows apparently wasn't willing to give me a new drive letter, stingy buggers. |

You can change the drive letters I think.
Control Panel> Performance and Maintenance> Administrative Tools> Computer Management> Disk Management Then theres a change drive letter around there somewhere. |

Well my brother just got an iPoo, and as a result, Windows assigned it MY D:\ letter, and gave my iHP an...E of all things. I wasn't happy so I changed it back to D. He now has an E as his, cheeky sod.

I have the same issue (I have too many things plugged into USB hubs!). I solve it as follows (WinXP Home):
- connect and turn on H Series - right click on My Computer and select Manage - when the console appears, select Device Manager - in the right hand pane, right click and select Scan For Hardware Changes This should now detect your "missing" drive without having to login and logout or reboot. |

I also have too many connections on my USB hubs, but your trick didn't work.
When I connect and reconnect, 1 out of 50 times (approx) the device is recognized. I tried my laptop, different cables but no luck. I'm afraid the USB port on my iHp is damaged. Is this possible when the device clearly states connected?
