I recieved my cables today and I too can't use the usb cable to connect to my computer. It charges fine, but when I plug in the usb my computer doesn't recognize it. When I use any other 2.0 or 1.1 cable it works and when I use my 2.0 ready digital camera with the minisync cable it works too. So it only doesn't work witht hat cable and the Iriver, any ideas?

I've had problems with my Vader 120 as well and a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card. When I tried to use the USB 2.0 cable from my external memory card reader with the USB 2.0 PCMCIA card, I got the same message...Device Not Recognized but when I plugged the same cable into my USB 1.1 port on the back of my T30 laptop, no problem.
But I don't have a problem when I use the iRiver USB transfer cable and the same USB 2.0 PCMCIA. I don't understand why the cable makes a difference but it did....personally I think it is something inside the various USB 2.0 chipsets, small changes in the cable construction renders certain USB 2.0 chipsets unusable. I saw something similar posted over at Riovolution....that there are certain USB chipsets that are more prone to this problem than others...it wouldn't hurt to go check your motherboard mfg and see if there are newer USB drivers for your board. Why it does it only with the iRiver may be because of a incompatibility between the iRiver USB 2.0 chipset and the motherboard USB 2.0 but isn't present when the iRiver talks with any USB 1.1 chipsets. Just a guess on my part....any hardware guys out there?

coreman, this is just a stab in the dark but did you have the power plugged into the h120 as well as the usb cable? i've got a feeling that when the player is drawing power from the usb port there's not enough being supplied to the iriver via the usb port.
other than that it's just a normal usb cable, right? |

Might I humbly suggest, if people haven't done so, that you contact Boxwave and explain the problems? It appears to be a very responsive company, and I imagine that it would want to know, including to try to better its products and maybe even make the situations right. Just a thought.

Just to let you know where I am with the miniSync - I've now tested three different miniSyncs with my H140 (BoxWave have been very helpful sending me relacements!) on three different computers (A Dell laptop, A Shuttle mini-desktop and a 'no name' desktop fitted with an Adaptec USB 2.0 PCI card) and NONE of the combinations worked when connected to the USB 2.0 port on any of the computers. You get an error message every time.
So - if you only have USB 2.0 ports on your computer then this device is likely not for you. It works fine when either:- a) Connected directly to a USB 1.1 port b) Connected to a USB 2.0 port via a USB1.1 hub I would agree with the poster who said that this was likely hardware related - but having tried three totally different and unconnected computers all with different USB 2.0 hardware and had no success with any of them I think the chances of success are slim. (Note: 'no success' means just that - NO success - not even at USB 1.1 speeds. No data transfer at all is possible with a direct connection to a USB 2.0 port) If you only want a charger cable, not a data transfer cable, then it's fine, charging always worked. An option is to use the miniSync as a charging cable only and simultaneously connect to the USB2.0 port with the iRiver supplied cable. Although not as elegant a solution it does work and is still lighter and smaller than the iRiver charger. miniSync seems a bit expensive however for what is then just a charger cable. All the way through this saga BoxWave have been extremely helpful and have offered to refund my purchase if it won't work for me - so no complaints about them. They have always been very responsive to my e-mails - they don't have an answer for the problem though unfortunately. |

Someone must tell them about it.
If you ask me I will wait for the USB 2.0 just in case... |

I've never run a single cable to charge and file transfer so I don't know if there is a problem with power drain on the USB port. However there was another thread on this site (too lazy to go look it up) where a member did a lot of testing with a dual cable that he adapted from his Compaq or HP computer and never found any problems with the USB not supplying enough power/current to both charge and file transfer. There does seem to be some differences with USB chipsets...I just don't know what the differences are.....

On a cable note, has anyone managed to get a retractable USB lead to work with a H series unit?
Today I received another standard USB A to mini B lead which works fine and a retractable USB A to mini B lead, but the retractable one doesn't work, in fact when I plug it into both the PC and the H140 the cable gets hot! the H140 doesn't recognise that it's plugged into the PC so doesn't show the Connected screen, both the PC and the H140 are still fine but what's up with the lead? edit: I contacted the eBay seller and he said send it back for a replacment of a normal A to mini B lead |

I tried the minisynch for the Rio Nitrus (my wife has one) and ti had the same problem as the Iriver with the USB not recognizing it, so it seems there is something systemically wrong with the split 1.1 wires on 2.0 ports.

Recieved this in an email from Boxwave:
We have encountered a slight discrepency with the functionality of the miniSync for the iRiver H120/H140, but are working to rectify the situation right away. Our engineers are diligenty working on an improved design, and we will have a fully functioning miniSync for the iRiver H120/H140 available for you in 2-3 weeks. |

Just got mine today. The usb and charge cables both work fine on my usb 2.0 machine.
I've noticed, however, that when the unit is fully charged using the cable the green light goes off as normal. But when you play a track through the pc the green charge light comes back on as if it's running from the battery as well as the usb power. My question is will this shorten the long-term life of the battery? Thanks in advance for any help. |

interesting you mention that scaammm, i take it this is unusual behaviour for your player? i don't think it should ruin the battery, something to do with it being a li-poly battery as opposed to a li-ion.
my player, when just plugged in normally will charge itself up then sit there, and when i start to use the player it won't run off power - it'll drain the battery and not recharge. i think this is a bit stupid and i find it annoying because the hypothetical situation that i'll probably never encounter but if i do it'll really suck is i plug in my player to the wall, use it for a while and drain the battery - next thing i'll have to go somewhere and bam, the player's battery will be drained. |

Its only when fully charged and connected to the boxwave usb + charge cable that the green light stays on during use. I guess it's because the usb has enough power to charge the H-140 but not enough to power it for use. My advice is use the mains charger unless away from home so the battery is not used while playing through the pc. |
