IHP Alternative Firmware Developers make major break!!!!

Hey everyone, I've lurked through these forums daily since the delay of the IHP-100 series firmware release but decided it was time to register when I read some exciting news this morning.

I'm sure others here have been following the progress of the gentlemen attempting to hack the IHP firmware over at the iriver@lounge forums....I know I for one check up on their progress daily and I must say I'm very impressed with the knowledge these guys have displayed along with their speed and dedication. Anyhow, today I awoke to read the wonderful news that they have now discovered the missing checksum and accomplished a major step.

Ok, just a note to say that the iRiver iHP firmware checksum has been identified

Updated ihpfirm software from

http://www.beermex.com/@spc/ihpfirm.exe
and source code at
http://www.beermex.com/@spc/ihpfirm.src.zip

This new release means you can download a firmware file from iRiver, decode it using ihpfirm, MODIFY IT, re-encode it using ihpfirm, and then upload it onto to your iRiver where it will now run successfully!!
Obviously there is a great chance you may kill your iRiver if you don't know what you are doing - so IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, DON'T DO ANYTHING!!

love & peace

I think we should show our support for these guys somehow....

It would be cool if they had a huge group of support from a site like this and a regular place to post progress updates like the guys at irviver never figured out how to do. It would be great to support these guys monetarily as well, something to the small tune of 10 bucks each maybe. Imagine how many people would join this forum ($12) and throw in another $10 to the programmers to gain access to regular firmware updates.

Please excuse me.....I realize I'm just a newbie making all these drastic suggestions. I'm just elated by the new hopes for firmware that are now boiling inside of me.

thanks for the info

Hey man, thanks for the info! I wasn't actually aware of the efforts being made on the firmware, as this is the only place I go for info on my H140. Its good to know someone out there is making headway. I'll be following this project now as well I'm sure.

I doubt the donations are necessary since this is a hobby for most, as many have jobs, so this is a spare time thing - but will note it Chronic

I guess it's probably a case of either seeing what iRiver produce now - if the forthcoming firmware is just an advance on previous firmwares, then fine - but, if they try and remove WAV recording (or any other feature for that matter), then this is where the alt. firmware kicks in. True, there will be a demand for 'personalised' firmware anyways, but until iRiver makes the next move, we'll have to wait and see what's been incorporated in THEIR firmware ...

FANTASTIC NEWS!

I've been watching them also. I for one am very excited, although I for sure won't be one of the beta testers! But if enough people test it, and they get good feedback, I for sure will be supporting them.

I just hope iRiver doesn't shut them down for reverse-engineering their software.

Also, I wonder if they will have any comments on sloppy iRiver code or similar.

Very, very good news. This makes me happy.

As far as beta testers go they seem to be working on an emulator for the primary testing of the firmware and they were also discussing running code off the harddrive so as to have a stable "core" code in flash mem that would act as a back up for crashes caused by experimental code on the hard disk. Either way this is great news and these guys are on-top their game.

The emulator appears to be a last ditch option;

Quote:
1. The emulator runs extremely slow (a JIT compiler would improve speed, but writing such a thing would be more complicated).
2. If a home-cooked and the original firmware runs on an emulator, it's not necessarily deducible that the home-cooked firmware runs on the iHP.
