Playlist help!

I can't get playlist to work on my iHP-120. I always make playlist in WinAMP, and the files are labeled as "WinAMP playlist files". When I transfer them to the "Playlists" folder on my iHP, then press A-B and pick the playlist, it always says "Playlist Error." Note that I even tried adding songs to WinAMP directly from the F drive (my iHP) and they still won't play.

However, I do also have some playlists that were made a while ago when I ripped a CD in Musicmatch Jukebox(I don't use it anymore) that is just a playlist with teh tracks from one CD, and that playlist works. Is there some sort of secret to making playlists correctly?

I can't believe it, but i think i may have your answer.........only because I went through the same thing when i got my 120 two months ago and downloaded Winamp (i, too, had been using Musicmatch for playlists prior to that)..
The secret is that when you create a playlist........you create it from files on the player already......NOT from files on your computer (which is what I had been doing and getting the same error message). The manual leaves out this intuitive but oh-so-important detail!

Rock on, amigo

one more thing.........after you create the playlist, you just drop it in the F-drive (using My Computer) and you should be good to go

Winamp has a new plugin that allows the iHP to be viewed from Winamp. This makes it much easier to make playlists...I don't have the link for it now but it was on the Winamp site (as I recall), it works great.

I found my playlists to work best when placed in the same folder as my music so that is where I have them stored. I couldn't get them to work properly off either the root or a separate folder.

The playlist is just a text file and should contain a list of music files to play. The files listed can have either an absolute path (from the root of the drive), a relative path (from wherever you've placed them) or no path (so must go in the same directory as the music files). An absolute path should allow you to place the playlists wherever you want. If you've got problems with a playlist then just open it in notepad and change the paths as needed.

dsipari: I've tried that, and it still didn't work.

Coreman: I thought playlists were m3u files, not txt files... also, I can't put them in my Music folder, because all my artist folders are in the ROOT folder.

vorlik, just create a folder at the root level named "Music" and highlight all your folders, drag em over, and move them there. This will have things sorted in a neater manner. After that, you should be able to press the A/B button and see the M3U files (which ARE essentially text files).

Ok...

I moved all my music into a folder called "MUSIC". I put the m3u playlist file in the folder, the m3u file having been made with music files from the F drive (my iHP). I press A-B and pick teh playlist, and I still get "Playlist Error". What can be wrong?

Vorlik..you're getting real close! You need to remake the playlist because the path changed when you moved the folders under Music.

Your tracks now have the "Music" folder in them but your playlist is still referencing the old path without "Music".

Ex: Old Path: F:\Beatles\One\Yeste rday
New Path: F:\Music\Beatles\One \Yesterday

Did you save the playlists directly on the player?
Do the paths to the tracks in the .m3u include the drive letter?

Get rid of the reference to the "F" drive (assuming your iRiver is labeled as your "F" drive when you plug it in). That's the tag your PC uses to find the file and it's not needed for the iRiver. So, change:

F:\MUSIC\The Offspring\Ixnay on the Hombre\03- The Offspring - Mota.mp3

to...

\MUSIC\The Offspring\Ixnay on the Hombre\03- The Offspring - Mota.mp3

This worked for me with Playlist files I made with Musicmatch, at least. I'm not sure wha tthe restof the data in the platlist text is...

No problem..but I am confused about one thing, I also use Winamp to make my playlists but when I put them on the player, they don't show up with the drive letter in them.

Vorlik, did you put the drive letter in or did Winamp put the drive letter in?

If you did because you were following my instructions, I apologize..I wasn't thinking, I should not have put the drive letter in my example.

Glad to hear it is working!

I was having the same probs as Vorlik and everyone's advice above solved the basic problem of getting the playlist to be recognized and work. However, to get it to work, I need to manually remove the drive letter from the .m3u using a text editor. Coreman, is there some setting you're using to aleviate this tedeous process? I'm using WinAmp ver 5.03a. The freebie, not fancy version. I've looked thru the menu and can't find anything about leaving drive letters out.
Any help?

Thanks.

If you export playlists from winamp it should manually check the path and change the tag (I think). It's worked for me.
I also create playlists from a separate drive on my computer and edit them in notepad so they have the correct path information. I've never had a problem with the edited playlist and can save them at root level
To remove the drive letter quickly in notepad go to edit/replace then input the drive letter and put nothing in the "replace with" box. This should do it automatically.
(Anyone who has used notepad to design webpages on a 286 computer, raise your hand)

Breck, are you really creating the playlist based on the files on your player and saving the .m3u directly on it? Cuz winamp doesn't put a drive letter in the file. Unless you're saving the playlist to a different drive.

Are there any programs that allow you to create a playlist based on your most listened to tracks (say top 25)???
