Had my Clix for 3 days now and have already realized there is something seriously wrong with the way the software uses the battery.

It's most noticable for me because I'm an "hour or two, every other day" kind of user. For me, the effective battery life is about two hours of play, which is unacceptable. Almost any time I need the player, the battery will be nearly dead even if my last power down showed 100%.

I have yet to update the original firmware on my 2GB. Will this situation be remedied or improved by replacing the 1.11 with 2.01?

If not, I hope iRiver will address this problem ASAP.

And why isn't the last track played info saved when the unit is turned off? It is flash memory, not saving the last track played is ridiculous!

Ipod's are soft off, and when you insert a headphoe to the jack it wakes up. How can they do that an not have the huge power drain that the clix sleep mode has?

Help me Obiwan Kenobe you're my only hope.

complete shut off

i have many mp3 players and i use the clix only every 3 or 4 days. after opening
it up my battery is always low. so if i want to cut off the sleep mode do i put
it on hold and reset it when the unit is on? the reason
iam asking is on one post somebody said everytime he restarts the player he lost his
setting but when i do it my settings stay the same way .

Yes, that is the way to force clix to turn off. The setting should stay the same, but the quick list might be gone.

thank you i will try this , my problem is that i have 8 different mp3 players
so i rotate them and i might not get to the clix for a week. from reading
7 pages from the forum tonight the instructions were not very clear whether
the unit had to be on to reset it but now it is clear the unit needs to be on
to shut it down without the sleep mode draining your battery. To me iam
very surprised that iriver did this. they normally make well thought out products.
Clieos thank you for getting back to me your post was very helpful.

But I don't understand ,I just bought one clix 4GB .
Under setting advanced,there is a power off type option,where I can choose between Sleep or Power off;
When I power on it, I see the botting screen ,the same when I reset.

Isn't the solution?

It isn't a Clix2 that you bought? The Clix2 is different.

Congrats if it is a Clix (1) and they really have fixed it.

It's really easy to add this option in clix too.

EDIT: Doh, was thinking about the Clix 2.....

I haven't read anything but the first post, so maybe this has been posted 10 times already but....

Maybe this is just on the newer firmware on my Clix 2 8GB Redline, but there is an option to actually make it turn OFF in the advanced options rather than simply making it go to sleep.

Download the latest firmware and change the power-off settings and it should be fine.

unlikely. iriver is probably keeping the clix 1 crippled with these major flaws to force people to upgrade. i personally hold my hand up to the fact that i'm tempted just to buy a clix 2 to be gone of these annoyances. in any other case, if the clix was enabled to have power off/sleep options i'd probably never upgrade (that is till my clix 1 bites the dust)

Hey everyone. I got my Clix last December as a birthday gift, and was absolutely thrilled with it... for awhile. Once the constant charging began to annoy me I decided to shelf the unit, and go without the hassle (roughly June '07.) Well, two days ago I pulled my clix out and decided to charge it, so I can use it on a trip. I charged it for two days straight (after not touching it for months), but the charge will not go past the first bar. This unit has hardly been used, and its still running the first firmware. I'd like to try to get this figured out before I leave (so I know if I need to buy another mp3 player.) I'm pretty discouraged with the Clix, and iRiver in general at this point.
The fact that they brought out the next generation of Clix without a solid firmware update for the original makes me question the company's priorities.
I've read through this thread multiple times on other occasions. Is there a chance the battery is faulty? I never fully turned off the unit myself, I let it sleep. Is there a chance I killed the battery? Any suggestions will be helpful. Despite it's annoying quality to die on me, I'm very attached to the bugger and would like to salvage our love/hate relationship.
I'll keep checking back in hope of help,
Bamf

The battery isn't faulty. It is likely your decision of shelfing your clix that kills the battery.

The reason are: 1) Clix will shut itself down automatically after 24 hours of inactivity, so there is no question of whether your clix has drained the battery too much or not, since it was off all the time when you are not using it. 2) All Li-ion battery can not be over drained, or the battery will be permanently damaged (which is why clix will warn you to recharge your battery and shut itself down when the battery is low). Shelfing your clix means its battery will be drained naturally (as all rechargeable battery do). Since you didn't check (or recharge) it all this time, the battery power dropped below the critical limit and resulted in irreversible damage - thus you will never be able to fully recharge it again.

It is my guess that when you decided to shelf your clix, the battery was already quite low. Shelfing it just make the whole thing worst since you could never know when the battery would get too low, which is what I believe happened in this case. In general, you need to keep Li-ion battery at >70% power before shelfing it, and occasional recharging is still required to keep it in good condition. What happened to you is not a problem of iriver or your clix, any DAP with a similar battery like your clix will probably end up just like yours.

Anyway, clix1 battery is only replaceable by iriver (under warranty) or The iriver Store. If you send it back to iriver under warranty, you might still need to pay for the repair (depends on how iriver will process your case).

Hello Clieos,

I need your help. I have run through all the battery issues, read your test as well, but still have some questions.

1. If I have an older type of USB connection on my PC,(it's not 2.0) will it make any difference in charging.Eg: charging time is longer, or it just won"t charge it to maximum capacity?

2. So, how to define a charging cycle? One deep charge equals one cycle.Does that mean five 20% charges equals one charge cycle out of the estimated 300, or five cycles. Hope you understand, I am not english

3.How should I charge to make my batt.'s life longer?!

As far as I remember, after a fully charge I had to put my Clix 4GB back into the cradle to charge after 24 hours because the battery bar was flashing. In this 24 hours there was about half an hour video=10%+one hour of music=5% and22.5 hours of sleeping=12,6%. This shoul be a total of 27,6%.

I am a bit scared. I bought my 4 GB 10 days ago, and just bought one 2GB for my wife.

Thanks for your time!

PS:Was there any firmware update concerning the total switch off mode?

1. USB1.0 / 1.1 / 2.0 should all able to charge your clix.

2. A charge cycle is when you full charged your clix than fully drained it. On paper, five 20% charges = 100% charge; But in real life, the answer is NO. A charge cycle is only a simple way of measuring how many times in average you can use you battery in a lab, so it can give you an rough idea of how tough you battery will be in real life. There is no accurate way of measuring charge cycle in real life.

3. In normal time, you can charge after a few hours (3~15) of usage, or charge it every two / three days. Every 2~3 weeks or so, drained the battery till one bar (or flashing), than recharge it to full (for ~3hours). You don't need to fully drain the battery before recharge. In fact, it is better you don't always drain your battery too much. Always keep your clix in a cooler place, cause heat kills battery. If you want to store your clix for more than 1 week with out any usage, fully charge it than use 'hold+reset' to shut it down before storing it. Takes it out every 2~4 weeks to fully charge it again. If you don't use it for 1 or 2 days, don't connect it to computer all the time.

Your battery did seems a bit short. I'll suggest doing part 2 (continuous run)of the test to confirm you have a good battery.

Me again,

2 hours 10 minutes passed and now( altough it still shows USB connected), an empty battery icon is flashing at the top right corner. What does that mean? I thought a full battery should be displayed constantly, at the end of the charging period.

And thanks a lot of course, I have just noticed, that you have answered. I think we were both writing at the same time.

Also, make sure you have WMP11 installed, and try another USB port or restart your PC if charging didn't go well.

I have all these things installed, and the battery is charged as well. I just wanted to know wether this flashing was normal. After discxonecting the clix empty battery started flashing even more rapidly , then the full battery icon appeared.

2. I have just upgraded my wife's 2GB from1.11 to 2.1. Everything went just fine. Then I had to disconnect, it rebooted itself for a few times then it said DO NOT Touch. Well i did not, but nothing seems to happen for a while now. For about 1
