iriver clix - user selectable transfer protocol?

A little background....

There are players in todays market that allow the user to select between a UMS (drag & drop) mode and an MTP (Windows Media) mode. Most notably the Archos line of players have this feature.

It is a great feature as it allows full UMS/File Tree/Drag & Drop for the "geeks" and/or a full Windows Media/Plays for Sure/Subscription environment for those that prefer it.

Please let your voice be heard in the poll if you'd like to see iriver implement this in the current clix lineup or any future or past players.

But what exactly is UMS? I can go into my clix through windows explorer and drop music files there and it will still work. So what's the issue?

You may vote as you like - but the way the clix was built, as a MS cooperation, I'd guess that a different FS would be just the opposit what iriveramerica wanted to build.

Get a U10 or a Meizu M6 if you don't want MTP...

UMS (MSC) or USB Mass Storage is the way your USB thumbdrive is recognized, in other words, as an external storage device. Main advantage, you wouldn't need any media player to sync with your media player (only drag and drop).

MTP or Media Transport Protocol is deviced as a means to send data back and forth media devices, it has some rather nice features, and also shares some characteristics with MSC, however the main difference is the use of metadata to build the device's database for artist, album, song, album art, etc.

Some people prefer UMS as it renders the player virtually universally supported by almost any operating system, as MSC is an USB standard. MTP has been submitted by Microsoft to the USB-IF to become an standard for media devices too, so if and when this standard is accepted, every OS will be able to implement it, in the mean time, support for MTP in other OSes (Mac, Unix, Linux, BeOS, etc) is mostly "hacked" in

iriver can still please microsoft with a user selectable option and please it's user base at the same time. It won't stop folks from using MTP but will give them an option. It's not a different file system, just an additional file system.

I was told that the Sansa e2x0 dual boots into MTP and UMS. If that's true then I think that would be the best of both worlds for the clix too.

It's a valid option, no matter what you might think.

Indeed, I'm sure Joe Average doesn't care how it works as long as it works. He will not care if the player will be able to build up the database with dragged and dropped files, as long as he is able to find such files, or what program to use to sync as long he's able to sync and the instructions in the manual are fairly simple to follow... That's about it. So indeed, people might just "don't care"

I'm perfectly happy with MTP and how my clix works with Urge. That being said choice is always good so I voted yes.

Errr, can't you change the U10 MTP<->UMS with the firmware upgrader. Not quite as convinient as a runtime option, but at least the option is there.

with 95% yes, and if iRiver care about reading what seems to be the major forums for its user-base, it would be a shame if they dont come up with a solution.
