Exclamation [U10/Clix FAQ]: Read this before posting!!!

Here is a list of FAQ for clix/U10 forum. (Updated 17 May 07)
If you can't find the information you want, try doing a search before posting.
If you want to suggest/correct anything, please discuss it on this thread.

Important
:
There are currently three models in the U seires: 1) U10, 2) Clix (a.k.a. U10 clix / clix1), and 3) Clix2 (a.k.a. U20).
U10 can be found in 3 capacities (512MB, 1GB, 2GB) and can run in MTP or UMS mode by loading different firmware.
Clix can be found in 2 capacities (2GB, 4GB) and run in MTP mode only.
Clix2 can be found in 3 capacities (2GB, 4GB, 8GB*) and can run in MTP or UMS mode by formating.
This FAQ is mostly for clix, however, each FAQ is marked for its applicable models.
[IMPORTANT] IF you are looking for clix2's FAQ, please visit clixhere.net.

1.How to install invisibleShield? [U10/CLIX]
Here is a guide by our MR member Verchielle. Remember this: incisibleShield can only be applied once, if it dries out than there is nothing more you can do. Current incisibleShield for clix is slightly larger than the surface area of clix and take a lot of care to apply well.
2. How to charge my clix? [CLIX only]
In normal condition, clix requires a Windows XP SP1 PC with WMP10+ installed to charge, no Mac or Linux is officially supported. You can not use clix when charging it. After clix’s battery runs flat, it can be charged by any self-powered USB port (including USB power adapter). Instead of the normal charging screen (a lighting bolt showing on the top right corner and the ‘USB connected’ message), a black screen with charging image will show after battery runs flat. An official USB-A/AC adapter is available at Iriver store of MR here (link on top of this page). The adapter will allow charging under all condition (even in use) and no PC is required. At least 2hrs is needed for a full recharge. Note: Normal USB adapter will not work properly with clix without modification on the USB cable (void warranty). You can search the U10/clix forum for keyword 'USB charging' to find more detail.
3. How do I truly shut down my clix? [CLIX only]
When you press the shut down button, clix will go into sleep mode instead of a true shut down. When clix is in sleep mode, battery will be drained slightly over time (which you won't be able to detected). If sleep mode is undisrupted for about 24hrs, clix will shut itself down (which will show the flash screen when turn on). A way to manually turn clix off is to lock the 'hold' key and reset the player (not recommended). Clix will be reset but won't turn on due to the 'hold' action, and It will simply shut down.
4. Why is my clix has a short battery life? [U10/CLIX]
It might be a faulty battery and you should RMA it. However, you should conduct a battery draining test before you concluded that the battery is faulty (or return it). Here is what you should do:
1) Encode some songs (preferably an album) as .mp3 (128bits CBR) files and sync it on your clix.
2) Fully charge your clix (overnight preferred).
3) Play the encoded songs under these setting: Repeat, No EQ (flat), Volume 20, LCD off, Hold.
4) Check the player battery (by unHold+Hold action) every 2hrs for the first 16~18hrs (roughly), than every hours afterward.
5) Report the result (total playback time) to our U10/Clix forum.
Gets an idea of how battery will drain on this thread.
5. Is clix a MTP device? How about U10 and clix2? [U10/CLIX/CLIX2]
Yes, they all are, but U10 and clix2 can be changed to Universal Mass Storage (Mass Storage Class)and clix can't. U10 can be switched by the firmware updater and clix2 can be switched within the firmware (follow by an auto formating). MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is a Microsoft developed protocol for managing media players via a universal driver framework called User-Mode Driver Framework (UMDF). All MTP devices use the same UMDF and so no extra driver is needed. MTP support is currently included in WMP10+ and Vista, and available to certain edition of Windows only (XP SP1 and Vista, as no one develops any UMDF for other platforms). In general, if you can install WMP11 onto your PC, than you can use a MTP device. Notice, once MTP U10 is switched to MSC mode, it will no longer able to playback DRM'ed music ever after switch back
6. Can I use my Clix on Linux? [CLIX only]
"Yes, you can. However it is not completely supported as you require the aid of a special library: libmtp. If you happen to have a Clix with firmware 1.11 you may attempt to use the gnomad2 program to sync your Clix using libmtp-0.0.2x, this version, though does not support firmwares 2.x which leaves Clix 4Gb and any updated Clix versions out. For these, however you may use libmpt-0.1.x which do communicate with 2.x firmwares, however you will have to do everthing from the command line." Here is an excellent guide by our MR member _gmureddu_ .
7. What is audible? [CLIX/CLIX2]
Audible is an audio book format used by Audible.com. The file is in .aa format. To obtain/use an audible content, you must install the AudibleManager software and have a pay account on Audible.com (free trial is available). Another clix supported audio book format is OverDrive, which uses wma format with DRM. For clix2 user, please use the clix profile in AudibleManager to connect to your clix2. Also note that clix2 can only uses Audible content in MTP mode.
8. Will clix/clix2 plays Ogg Vorbis files? [CLIX/CLIX2]
Yes, it will (up to Q10). However, there is no easy way to sync .ogg files by any software (WMP10+/MediaMonkey). The files can be dragged and dropped manually to the music folder, but clix won't read the metadata/tag of .ogg files if you do this and you will have to play the music by "browse device>music". There is a more advance 'fix' for playing ogg files in WMP and clix that requires registry modification. If you really want to play ogg files on your WMP and clix, there is a excellent guide wrote by our MR member Ted Yo!.
9. What is the difference between using clix with WMP10 vs. WMP11? How about MediaMonkey? [CLIX only]
When using clix with WMP10, some of the function will be lost (like drap and drop videos, copy, rename or move files and folders via Windows Explorer). Read Iriver Faq for more information. An alternative of both is MediaMonkey, which also has its own good and shortcoming. A discussion thread about MediaMonkey is available here. Try not to interchange between different types of management softwares.
10. Can I use the U10 Cradle with clix? [CLIX/CLIX2]
Yes, the U10 cradle can be used with U10 and clix. However, you can not use the FM radio when docking into the cradle. Also, clix2 has its own cradle/dock and can not be used with the original U10/clix cradle.
11. Where can I find flash games for clix/U10? [U10/CLIX/CLIX2]
Flash games for clix and U10 are available at Iriver America and Iriver Korea. Search older post to find other website. Thanks for some of our members' effort , here are a few games for clix:
andysoft - Tyrian Lite
santoki - Jump
misticidonkey - Mr Blobs Journey
JustasSireika - Snake
12. Can I manually update my clix's firmware? [CLIX/CLIX2]
Yes, but the official iriver MTP firmware updater is recommended for updating clix. A simple guide can be found here. If you really need to do a manual update on your clix, here is a guide by MR member Ted Yo!:

If you have a 2G clix, the correct versions are labeled "Clix 2G", the 4G firmware is "Clix 4G". The last three letters are the language (English is ENG).

After downloading the firmware, extract the HEX file from the zip.
Plug in your device.
Open My Computer
Open the Clix
WMP10: Open the data folder
WMP11: Open the root storage
Copy the hex file that you unzipped into this folder.
Unplug your device.

After the firmware update has completed, format your device.
Transfer your content back to it.
EXTRA NOTE: The firmware labeled 'CLIX' is for clix2 only.
13. Why is my clix's maximum volume limited on custom EQ setting? [CLIX/CLIX2]
There is an anti-distortion function built into clix. The higher you set your custom EQ, the lesser the maximum volume will be as it tries to limit the distortion.
14. Why can't I update my 4GB clix firmware (2.00) to 2.01? [CLIX only]
It is because the 4GB clix uses a different firmware (v2.00) than that of 2GB clix (v2.01). However, the old updater can't tell the different between the two player and will try to install the firmware of 2GB version (v2.01) on the 4GB player (v2.00), which of course is not possible. As far as we know, the two firmware show no difference on all functions and features. A new version of the MTP firmware updater has been released, which solved the recognition problem and fully compatible with Windows Vista.
15. How to send picture onto clix? [CLIX only]
The picture can be synchronized by WMP11. This will allow WMP11 to resize the image to 320x240. The picture can also be dragged and dropped into the image folder. Doing so will allow you to keep the original file size, and clix will attempt to fit it into the screen size. The only image format supported by clix is non-progressive JPEG file.
16. Can I change the wallpaper on clix? [U10/CLIX]
Yes, any viewable pictures (non-progressive JPEG) on clix can be used as wallpaper. Using the random setting will allow the player to change the wallpaper randomly everyday at 12am midnight.
17. Can I delete files without connecting my clix to a PC? [CLIX only]
Yes, but only if your clix is running firmware 2.0+. Go to 'Extra' -> 'Browse Device' and hold '>' on the file you want to delete. Note: [Albums] and [Flash Games] can not be deleted.
18. Why can't I find certain settings under 'settings' menu? [U10/CLIX/CLIX2]
Some setting can only be accessed by holding the '>' key for a few seconds when you are playing (video/music/picture/FM).
19. Why is my clix doesn't work well with Rhapsody music service? [CLIX/CLIX2]
There is unspecific compatible issue among clix, WMP, and all version of Rhapsody music managing software that cause the crashing/freezing of clix (and clix2 with firmware up to 1.07 and Rhapsody-supported firmware 1.10). There is no known fix for clix1. To solve the problem with clix2, you need to get the latest Rhapsody client and clix firmware.
The latest release of clix2's Rhapsody enable firmware is v1.14.
Please refer to this thread on how to find the right firmware for your clix2.
