IMP1000/1100 , how would you feel ?
This series can play dvix movies (w/o screen is IMP1000),however using CDR/RW as storing medium , looks a bit out dated .Personally think that Iriver should use DVDR/RW as the media , that makes it more competitive .

It's a simple logic behind CD use rather than DVD.
More people have CD burners, despite the fact that DVD recording is coming down in price rapidly. After all, any CD recorder out there can write to a form that is transparent to all CDP's if written in a standard ISO format (as we are talking CD-ROM's). DVD support is dogged by the fact that disc recording is split amongst three competing disc formats (+, - and RAM), and to implement only one is like cutting off up to two thirds of the potential market. Likewise, there are far less tri-format DVD recorders on the market and they also carry a price premium - and you'd find a truly worthy DVD iMP would also carry a bigger price premium over that of a top-line CD based iMP. Sticking to CD format, iRiver get to reuse tried-n-test technology, of which they built their success on, and hence it's a no-brainer really.

Dunno about anyone else here, but i'd find 2+ hours of long video file hard work to watch on an inbuilt 'small display' like the iMP and H series has.
So 2hrs seems a fairly reasonable 'normal' video capacity really. The only portable i could stand to watch the LCD on, in 'PVP' terms, for anything more than ten mins, was the bigger unit built into the Archos AV4xx units. I know, younger people have more tolerence than i do.. and probably got eyesight in better shape... my probs are probably just 'old git' stuff

If the iMP-1100 (the black and gold one without the screen) was able to play DVDs, it'd be great to use it as a portable DVD player as it has a TV out!
As for the iMP-1000... It still needs improvement on getting slimmer and a bigger screen would make it shine. (I hope I got the 1100 and the 1000 models right... might be the other way around) |
