IMP-350 No Disc Error

This morning I powered on my iMP-350 on the way to work, and was terrified to see the "No Disc" error message that the iRiver boards are talking about. The player is two years old this December (was a christmas present) so the warranty expired long ago. I called the iRiver 1-800 number, and they said that there was no way I could possibly get it replaced or repaired, even if I was willing to pay.

At this point I'm willing to do just about anything to save it, including opening the player and fiddling with it, if anyone can give me instructions of what to do when I get in there. I would of course prefer a way to get it fixed/replaced without risking destroying it even worse, but I don't think that's possible anymore?
Anyone have any ideas? TIA

Update: I e-mailed iRiver Support and they gave me the same message. No replacements or repairs available. Does anyone have any ideas on a self-repair?

Oh boy, that really sucks. I'm quite shocked that after 2 years they don't have any spares available.
Sounds to me as if it's worth taking it apart since you have nothing to lose now.

Yeah, I took it apart. I can take some scans of the insides tomorrow, if anyone's interested.

I just bought a used imp550 and it stop working too. After the 3rd day. Not the seller fault since it came working perfectly, but i didnt do anything to it either.

The player was laying flat on my bed, while listening to it it fail to load to the next song. And then i try every different cds and realize the laser lens stop working. It kept making the same noise like its getting suck. If i move the lens away from the motor, it try to move back while trying to play the disc, in a choppy manner. I tried it with battery and adaptor, mp3 cd adn redbooks. In the end i just get a no disc error.

It's obvious that something is wrong with the laser head, but i dont know how to fix it. Do anyone have any tip?

Too bad because i really would like to keep it. It sound better than my ihp120 and more fun than my dne300.

i fixed it! oh my god.

i unscrewed and opened up the player. then i saw a cables batch that goes from the motor department to the board. i unplugged and plug it back. also playing around with the motor department by lifting it off the original position and then putting it back. then burned a cd with the new v1.8 korean firmware in. without putting the lid back, i put on the disc and use my screw driver to hold the button that make the player think it is closed, the disc actually loaded. the firmware installed (even though i see no new features) now its playing beautifully.

well this is two different players so i dont what are the chances your have a similar problem. it might worth a try. if you have a laser lens cleaner, try that also. good luck.

Wow, thanks! I haven't been online in a few days (computer's been iffy) but I'll make sure to try that in a few minutes.

So I opened it up and looked at the motor part. The only cables leading to the main board are impossible to unplug. Thanks anyways.

I won't be surprised they didn't have a part... I've got a imp-350 from eons ago.... and it kinda spoilt about 8 mths ago.

Local retailer said it was a problem with the laser.... and said there was a tendency for it to spoil after long use..... (yeah.. i used it plenty)

They sent it back to korea for replacement parts.... came back with an entirely new player... because they didn't have parts.

I don't think they'll have parts now... or even the darn player....

Angry Ailing 350

I have similar problem now with my 350 purchased 3 years ago. The FM works very well; in fact, it sounds really good and I hate to give it up. For a while I thought I could get iRiver to repair it but from what I read here, it is impossible. I have been considering buying the H320 but with the attitude of iRiver surrounding repairs of their products, I don't know if I should spend my money on them. What do you think?
