Using Optical Out with iMP-550

So I used an optical cable from my old Sony MD to connect my iMP-550 to my Hi-Fi, and when I turn it on and start playing, it doesn't work even when I switch the mode to Aux on the hifi (none of them work) Seeing as this is one of the advertised features that made me buy the iMP, I'd very much like to know if there is a way to get this to work.
My Hi-Fi is one with 3 seperately bought parts, a CD player, a tuner and an amplifier. The optical-out goes into the CD player.
Is there something wrong with the cable I used (it came with old Sony MD and was used for recording, if that makes a difference)

There's no option to turn Optical on/off either as I heard someone saying thats what you do with the H140

Umh, the optical cable from your iMP-550 should of course go to an optical input in your AMPLIFIER, not to the optical output of your CD player.

Then you can't do it that way. But you can use the noraml copper cable inputs no problem.

If your amplifier has no optical IN,
then how did you imagine to connect your iMP-550 with it
using an optical cable?
There's probably nothing wrong with the cable,
it's just you would need an optical IN (unlike in the case of your MD,
which used the optical OUT to record from,
but the iMP is no recording device).
