Dead imp-350 SlimX
So my IMP-350 seems to have bit the dust. I think it's something wrong with the motor or the laser, or something, as nothing else has worked so far. I guess my question is twofold, to try and figure out multiple things.
One: The slimx refuses to recognize CDs now. If I try to load a CD or an MP3, it just sits there looking stupid on startup going "Loading..." and then eventually fails. The firmware on it is 2.6beta, and I would have downgraded except it can't read any CDs! Does anyone have any suggestions for trying to fix this? Second: How does one safely crack these open? I want to try and look at the innards to see if anything stupid's happened to it (eg cable fell out, laser motor off track, etc) that won't be too hard to fix. However, it seems that at the front and back of the player there is something that is preventing me from successfully prying the player open (plastic tabs?). What is the safest way of cracking it open without destroying everything? Thanks all |

I have the solution
Many people have had this sort of problem, including myself. The player wouldn't stop loading and it looked like the motor on the laser was broken. The FM worked fine though. I e-mailed iRiver and they eventually sent me an RMA. I sent it back and got a brand new replacement. My warrenty was dead for over a year too! At first, I thought they ignored my e-mail, but they're just slow to respond. Expect it to take over a week or two form them to reply to your e-mail. Or you may try calling.

How long ago was this? I tried emailing them once but they asked me for a purchase date, and I didn't want to lie about it so I never responded :\ I also tried calling and they asked me for when my warranty expired, same thing.

When I e-mailed them, I got an auto-response, which gave me a customer service e-box. It gave me RMA instructions and told me they'd replace it. I did this about a month and a half ago.

mine died too... [no disc]
My trusty ol' 350 died last week, and I've been putting off fiddling with it...
So today I started trying to figure out what the problem is. I held down the little button which convinces the player the cover is closed, and the disc started spinning initially, but soon quit (and naturally didn't find the disc). The rectangular black part which holds the spinner & the lens track wiggles around a lot. I can tip it to several different angles, but nothing I do with it seems to convince it to recognize the disc. I don't think it's supposed to move like that... Anyone have ideas as to what part exactly has quit? And if there's anything that can be done? I'm going to call iriver tomorrow, but as I bought this player 3-4 years ago, I highly doubt that'll get me anywhere. Update: Called iRiver today, and the rep said tough titties! So now it's time to crack it open myself... Last edited by alissa : June 13th, 2005 at 02:08 PM. |

Insane
My original SlimX 350 that I my parents bought me for my birthday 3 years stopped reading discs 13 months later. iRiver graciously replaced it without even asking when I bought it. I didn't have the new one a year before it happened again. I can't even listen to the radio now; there's no sound.
After that, I decided I would get a 550, but then decided to get an MP3 player. That was before I'd even heard of the iPod. That was months and months ago, and only 7 days ago did I get an H10 20GB. I decided to stick with iRiver because I have a fondness for them and the features are incredible. My advice to all you living in iRiver's past with the 350 is to get either an H320 or one of the H10s. It's better than carrying a bunch of MP3 discs around. ~ Eincrou Knight |

How dare you refer to the iMPs as "Discmans" That's like calling an H10 an iPod (well, i guess that's slightly worse ~ Eincrou Knight |

well actually, discman is a product name (registered by sony). so you cant call them discmans either. the correct term would be portable cd players.
but i must admit you can compare them to ipods. they are made the same eg, shit, cheap, and badly serviced. |

So it seems. My mistake. ... and I disagree with the iMp series being called "shit, cheap, and badly serviced." Maybe the badly serviced part (how would I know about this as I haven't had a single problem with them yet) but they aren't shit or cheap. |
