UMS: Cannot see files on device from PC and vice-versa.
I have an iFP-190TC. I successfully performed a firmaware upgrade to UMS 1.11 (including the formatting FAT16 part).
When I put files on the device they do not show up on the menu, but they are there physically, as I can disconnect and reconnect, and copy the files back onto the PC. Same thing applies for .REC files generated on the device: they do not show up on the UMS mounted device from the PC. I think I know why this happened, but I don't know how to fix it. After I upgraded, everything worked fine under windows. But under Linux I was frustrated, because I had to apply the silly patch to the linux kernel just to realize that the partition table was totally messed up. I think this is normal, and the device can function properly with the messed up partition table, but I thought I was smart and wiped it, creating a clean one (with fdisk) with a single partition. Then I formatted FAT16 again and copied files on the device. And that's where I am now. I figured another firmware upgrade would do the trick, but I have no way of doing it, since I can't see the upgrade file from the device once I copy it there, and, obviously, IMM can't see it neither. Maybe I can fix my problem by rawriting an UMS image from a good UMS device with dd. That's what my plan was. Any feedback? Do you think it's a good idea? If so, are you willing to help me by creating an image of your UMS filesystem? Thank you! |

i Need Your Help!
I still haven't solved this problem
I am trying to solve this problem with iRiver, over the support site, but all they were able to suggest so far, was to reformat, and try to reflash. Both things I already tried: the formatting changes absolutely nothing, and the flashing doesn't work, because the drive cannot see the firmware upgrade I placed on it. If somebody has a working IFP-190TC with UMS Please contact me! Maybe you can help me fix this problem relatively easily. |

Can't speak for the IFP-1xx, but my IFP-795T doesn't have a partition table at all. The filesystem occupies the entirety of the device.
Maybe a mkfs.vfat on the /dev/sda entry itself (without a number to identify a partition). My machine also has a FORMAT option in its menus, perhaps that could work for you as well? |

atrus!
Thanks alot for your help. In reality, I have already solved my problem, and You are absolutely right. That's exactly the fix. I have discovered it thanks to somebody who had sent me an email like in January 2005. He wasn't too clear about what the exact problem was. Anyways, as soon as I fixed it, I wrote this nice, well written reply, citing him, and where he was right, and where he was wrong and all, but there was a net problem and the post got lost. )-: I lost my patience at the time, and didn't want to spend any more time with it. I'm sorry, I know I owed an answer to the community. Thanks to all! |
