Can't transfer files

I have an i-river 799. It is about 3 years old. I didn't have problems transferring files to until recently. The bigger the file the more difficult it is to transfer, most of the time it won't transfer. Does flash wear out? I have tried all of the firmware versions available and that hasn't helped.
What else could I try to get it to work?
