Hi
They just lowered the price to 15000 yen which is about $130 so I broke down and bought one. It works fine with the music manager installed in English, but I haven' been able to upgrade the firmware to UMS or anything else.I knew it might not, but,you know, I had to try. When I tried using the IMM to do the upgrade, nothing happened after I had selected the Hex file and pressed upgrade firmware. The IMM "dont touch anything, wait for the player to shutdown" warning comes up but the player refuses to respond. I tried simply moving the hex file to the player and running the upgrade from The "Upgrade firmware" option on the "general" menu that pops up when you press the multifunction switch straight down for a second or so but the upgrade option was not there (nor was the "format" option). It's been so long since I used the IMM firmware that I don't remember if this is normal for it. I suspect they limited this for DRM purposes, or maybe the processor can't manage running FAT for 4GB? I'm still quite pleased and am dedicating this one to music- I use my other IFP's for podcasts, and they all fit the waterproof cases. Hope this helps. |

I expect the reason for no UMS is that the processor isn't fast enough to encode at high bit rates (above 96kbps) and still have time to write to flash memory in FAT format. That was the limitation with the IfP-799/899, and I believe that the F700 uses the same processor.
The F700 is available from at least one Ebay seller and through Akinaiblog (Netsenger), but definitely not for $130! As mp3 players go the price is out of sight, but as flash recorders go it's quite reasonable. At $130 it would be unbeatable. However, if Iriver ever decides to offer it in the states I expect that the price will be closer to $200. |
