Mono Mic and Best Settings for interviews.

I bought a giant squid mono mic and when I plug it into the Iriver Ifp-890 it still detects it as stereo. Is this normal? I also read on the giant squid site that if you had a mono mic it might extend your playing time. Is this true for the 890?

I also want to hear from users on what setting they have used to get the best results for interviews.

Bit Rate?
Sampling Frequency?
Record In Volume?
and any other setting that might help. EQ?

Thanks.

The Ifp-890 doesn't actually "detect" the mic, there is a setting in VOICE RECORDINGS to change the recording to mono. I believe you do get a longer recording time with the mono setting and if you are just recording meetings and such there's no need for stereo. The bit rate I use for voice recordings is lower (12 than the 192 I use for mp3 music. I can't detect the difference in audio quality with voice recordings but it definitely bothers me (the lower bit rate) with music. Again, the sampling frequency is much less important for voice recordings than music (much less audio data involved). I've never fooled with an external mic on the iRiver so I don't know what to tell you about the level to use. When I do a voice recording with the built in mic I adjust it to the conditions. Usually I just leave it around the default setting or maybe bump it up a little if the talkers are further apart than normal. By the way, you have to set the iRiver to use external mic or it will always use the internal mic and I recommend using AGC on for voice recordings. Play with the settings and if you go to the record screen you will see the time remaining for recording. If I remember right, my 258M will get me about six hours of recording time with the settings I use.

It's a mono mic so record in mono... as long as you got the iriver version of the mic (the pin assignments for the iriver is different).

As far as bit rate goes: if you are in mono you are only recording 1 channel as opposed to 2 so you only need half the rate... makes sense right. So if YOU think music sounds good at 192Kbps/44.1KHz stereo (to me it does) then the mic should sound great at 96Kbps/44.1KHz mono. Should get almost 6hrs with that!

For Rec volume a good starting point would be about 45 and adjust from there.

Hi Almo:

I agree with jcolaent-great info! I just completed a nearly 3000 word article on how to get great results with the iFP 700 and 800 series players. It also includes some microphone suggestions based on my experience with them. You can find it at http://imagingbuffet.com/?p=241

All the best,

Question How did you guys get the ifp-890 to work with an external mic?

Hiya,
I'm confused. How did you guys get the ifp-890 to work with an external mic? I had the ifp-890 for a while and assumed I couldn't use an external mic (without an external preamp) with it. How do you guys do that?
Thanks
