Hi,
I just recently bought a new MacBook after my trusty old Windows XP machine died on me, and I installed the iRiver Music Manager software on my new OS X 10.4 computer. I had previously been using the player on Windows using the included software and I haven't upgraded my firmware so I believe it is the non-UMS 1.243. However, when I start up the software, it displays 'Device Offline' and does not list any of my files. So I have a couple of questions: 1) Has anyone successfully connected their ifp-799 (or similar) player using the iRiver Music Manager software on OS X 10.4? 2) Has anyone done that AFTER having used that player on Windows? 3) Does anyone know of any other software that supports the iRiver that runs on the Mac? I know there are various 3rd-party software pieces available for linux (since it is officially unsupported), is there anything similar on the Mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Similar problem
Hi, I have the ifp-795 already for several years and changed the firmware so that I could use as a UMS ( v 1.2
Very easy and worked perfectly well so I didn't need the music manager. However, I haven't used the 795 for a while and in between updated my OS to 10.4 (currently 10.4. |

That's bizarre... I would like to upgrade my firmware to the UMS, but I can't connect to it to do so...
Not sure what I should do... maybe I will try and get a hold of Windows machine to do it... I would imagine the iRiver drive would have been formatted as FAT originally, I'm not sure what the Disk Utility formats it as... but that may be something to check? |

Format error
I finally got hold of a Windows machine that could connect to the drive (as UMS). I then updated the firmware to the latest UMS version 1.85. This can be done by downloading the self-executing .hex file and putting it in the root of your ifp 799 and choosing 'firmware update' from the menu 'general'.
Nevertheless Mac OSX still could read it. After some more fiddling around I discovered that my ifp-795 uses a FAT32 (!) format (that is when you use the format option from the menu 'general') ...... So after I formatted it with the windows machine as FAT also my Mac could read it again. For me the problem is solved. I suppose you should indeed find access to a windows machine and try to repeat these steps. You will however loose all your files on the ifp... |

MAC os x 10.4 ifp 799 ok, but linux?
Hello.
I been using ifp 799 on windows with firmware 1.21, then I upgrade to 1.25, and then I switch to mac, but without any problem. the iRiver software immediately recognized it. Now i try to use it in linux, you know, I realize thee`s nothing like free software. Also mac has "secret parts" in the os. I know is more difficult, but once you started is a pleasure to see how the linux os grows up in your pc. I think is possible to connect to linux BUT only with the UMS firmware , and I don-t like to go down to 96bps of bitrate in the recordings ... Do anybody knows a UMS firmware without restrictions of bitrate? thank you |

Hi, everyone. I'm new to the iRiver, having just gotten mine yesterday. I got an IFP-790 from ebay. It runs fine, but it won't mount on my Mac (iBook G4, latest OS X). System Profiler doesn't see it or anything, but the iRiver does say it's connected. I can't update the firmware since I can't mount it. The music manager doesn't see it, either.
Thanks in advance. |

Emolpus - I haven't tried using it, but there's a project on Sourceforge to build a manager-equivalent for Linux.
http://ifpgui.sourceforge.net/ You will have to flash the player firmware to IMM version. Then you can record up to 320kbps again. As I understand it, the IFP processor isn't fast enough to encode at > 96kbps and also write to FAT-formatted flash memory. Writing to the proprietary Iriver memory format is presumably faster, so it can encode at a higher bitrate. Give ifpgui a spin, and let us know how it works for you. |
