Hmm, I not sure if "piggybacking" will work - I think that the s1mp3 player supports piggybacking due to the way the board is designed. I need to search up more on this to see if piggybacking can be used universally on mem chips.
The "surefire" method, which I believe will work with your player (and mine What we can do is buy a mem chip from the link you gave, and solder it into the spare slot, and hope it works. I've checked that the chips his selling are the exact same make & model as the chips in my player, so no worries there. You should crack open your player and check if they're similar - datasheet for model number. I'm not too sure if you can have different capacity chips (1GB chip & the original 512MB chip) together. I'm going to get a pair of 1GB chips from him as soon as I get a debit card - see if I can get me a 2GB player! (Really hope that I don't run into the FAT16 Volume size limit...Theoreticall y it is 4GB, but you never know if the implementation by iriver is not complete...) |

Ok, did more reading up, and had a good look at this page, particularly the part about Device IDs.
I've checked up the respective datasheets for the different capacity chips, and the 1 GiB chip (K9K8G08OUM), has an id of 0xd3, which doesn't seem to be supported. There goes my dreams of a 2GiB player... If you want to put the 512 MiB chip in your player, I think there's an 80% chance it would work fine. I also had a read through the datasheets concerning piggybacking, and I'm absolutely positive that it would work just fine - all these memory chips have the "chip enable" pin, which allows for piggybacking, as long as the firmware supports it. According the the rockbox link above, the author says that the firmware should allow up to 4 chips, which is good news for piggybacking. As for piggybacking chips of different capacities, I believe it will not work. |

I haven't done anything yet - I didn't have the guts to solder such fine-pitch chips for some time. But recently, my hands started to get itchy, and I figured that if I botched up this player, it was time for a hd-based player anyways.
So, I have just sent off an email to the guy selling the chips to see if he's got any more stock. Hmm, as for your case, you're lucky - you got all the parts with you I guessing that you too are a bit wary of soldering things to your player? If you're in a uni/college environment, it shouldn't be to hard to find a friend in the electronic dept, with all the necessary equipment and skill. There is actually another guy who seems interested in the idea of upgrading his player - http://www.misticriver.net/showthread.php?p=503831. Oh ya, what's damaged in your friend's player? perhaps it might be fixable (unless the screen broke, then nothing to say liao lol) |
