IFP-799 - what firmware to update to ?

Hello everyone,

I bought an iRiver IFP-799 ( 1 gig model ) about 2 years ago,
and am still using the original firmware on the player.

I remember reading last year, or earlier that there was a firmware
available from iRiver that would make this player behave like a USB device.

But, there was also a downside, ... something to do with the record rate
that the player would record from the fm tuner .... ( it made the recording worse ? )

In any event, can somebody perhaps steer me in the correct direction to get
the firmware for this player, ( if it still exists ) ( I see iRiver doesn't sell this player anymore )

Thank you in advance.

UMS firmware will allow to record with 96kbps at max (from any source - radio, mic, line-in) and transfer will be slightly slower (ie. copying MP3 files to player will be slower)...

but player will be recognised just as pendrive is, no additional program is needed (well... there are drivers, but only for win98 - other systems do not need any drivers)

you decide... and whic version? the newest one ;]

1.85 if you want UMS or 1.65 if you want IMM (this is the same firmware, do not look at numbers )

and one more "but" - if everything is "just ok" for you... maybe you do not need upgrading?

hi Khron,

thank you for the info.

Well, I do wish to have the ability to move files to the iFP-799 without the use of the MusicManager, AND to also move files FROM the iFP-799 to the laptop.

With the new firmware, am I able to move files from the player to the laptop ?

Hmm, I am puzzled, don't I have IMM already if I have the original firmware
that came with the player ?

I'm a bit new to this, sorry for all the questions.

If you are using iriver Music Manager, you have IMM firmware (player with UMS firmware is not recognized by iriver Music Manager...)

with UMS firmware, you can do with player anything, that you can do with ordinary pendrive (plus it will play music ) - you can copy files in any direction and without any restrictions then...

Hi three KHRoN,

what is the bitrate I would be able to record at currently ( I have never updated my firmware on my iFP-799 ) is it higher than 96kbps ?

thank you for your time.

now (it will be the same for any, even new, IMM firmware) you can record with bitrate up to 320kbps (radio and line-in) and 128kbps (internal mic)
