Was it a .zip archive that you downloaded? Just use StuffIt Expander to unzip it, from memory an icon looking like a vice will bounce up and down in the dock.

I'm only a very occasional Mac user, but my first ever flash upgrade (this summer) to my shiny new ifp-899 was performed using an iMac, so I know it can work.

Erm, what do you mean by "Open" the .hex file? The .hex file is the firmware, and it needs to be transferred to your iFP-899 using the relevant method (IMM or UMS).

If you go to http://www.iriver.com and follow the download links for the iFP-800 Series, you should find the firmware and a set of step-by-step instructions for Upgrading Firmware (Manager or UMS versions).
