Question How can I directly convert a .rec file to a .mp3 file?

Hi guys!

As you can see from the title, my question is: How can I directly convert a .rec file to a .mp3 file?

further details: I have a IFP-190TC (Built-In FM Tuner & Voice Recorder, 256 MB)

It has an integrated mic so you can record voices. It saves the recorded files as ".rec"-files. What I want is, to directly convert this .rec-files to .mp3-files. I tried it already with the Manager-Software and also with the "UMS Converter" (which allows you to convert .rec files using the UMS firmware, which I personally prefer)

In both ways the .rec file is only converted to a .wav file!! In the help section of the Manager it says that you can convert the .rec file into a mp3 file, but I still haven't figured out how it should work.

the following is written on the IRiver Homepage in the support area:
(http://www.iriveramerica.co m/support/ums.aspx ) "In order to convert Voice / Tuner (REC) files, simply access the Voice or Tuner Folder from the Removable Disk drive, and drag or send it to a location on your PC. Once the file has been transferred onto your PC, right click on the file and you will see the option to have the file converted. Click on the option and the Voice / Tuner file will convert into a WAV or MP3 file."

Is it in general possible with the Manager or the UMS-Converter? (I couldn't find a way to choose between mp3 or wav before converting)
Or do I need another software?

I hope one of you guys knows the answer(s).
Thanks for your help in advance!!

Correct me, if I'm wrong, but with my iFP-899, you can just change the extension from .rec to .mp3 and voila, that's it...

I've already tried this but it doesn't work. I mean of course I can change the name from .rec to .mp3 but when I want to play the file (I tried 3 different media players) it doesn't work (really): Windows Media Player says that the file is damaged, Winamp just skips this file without playing and the odd thing is that VLC media player plays the file but it sounds disorted, unclear and is hardly to understand (very poor quality). -> If I play it with my Iriver IFP-190TC it sounds very clear and is in very good quality.

So that's why I wanted to know if there is any possibility to convert .rec in .mp3

Anyway: Thanks for the answer.

On the 7xx and 8xx series the recording really is an MP3 file with the extension ".REC". Renaming the file definitely works on these players. If that isn't working use the IMM software to do the conversion, it has a feature to do it. I've made plenty of recordings on an IFP899T though and just renamed the files, always works for me!

Hmm, with my iFP-395T I can also just rename the .rec extension to .mp3, and play them perfectly.

as far as I know iFP-100 record to ADPCM WAV, and the rest (iFP-300/500/700/800/900) to MP3

... so one solution is to convert iFP-100's REC->WAV, and WAV->MP3
... and another is to try if foobar2000 plays REC file... if yes then RMB on that file, Convert->Run, MP3, ok :]
