Unhappy Troubles with External Mic Recording -iFP799

G'day

Im an Australian visiting USA for a major conference and have just purchased iFP799 and a SONY ECM-C115 lapel mic for recording important presentations.

I am frustrated trying to get it to work. I have had it work but saldy no more, which leads me to a setting. I have read and re read the manual and spent far too much time on it. Theres a typo in the manual BTW - on Page 4-15 bottom right corner it refers to 4-23 it took a while to figure out it was 5-23.

It is extremely important I get this external mic problem fixed and it be reliable.

I have set the control to ext mic and can hear the mic great through the headphones. When I record I get EXMIC files ok but nothing on them I have tried all over the place to find what it might be

Can anyone help please

Regards
Allan

Allan - It sounds like the mic is sending signal to the left channel (probably via a "mono" mini phone plug), but the iFP790/890 series units actually record from the right channel of a stereo mini plug. For some reason the unit monitors the left channel to see if there is audio (and starts the record sequence) but nothing is recorded (the "tip" of a stereo mini-phono plug). The standard headphone plug uses the tip for left channel, the "ring" for right channel, and the "sleeve" for the common, or ground connection. If you can find an adapter that splits the mono audio out of the mic plug and split it out to both the tip and right (both channels) it should work for you. That is what I do when recording bird songs with my parabolic dish and an iFP 795. A cheap tirck is to pull the mono mic plug out part way and see if it makes connection to the middle ("ring") connection in the iFP, it works for me, but is not physically stable, of course. I've just rewired my plugs to send the audio to the "ring" or middle connection, but I am an electronics tech with a soldering setup, etc. Write me back if this doesn't make sense, and I'll send a drawing or something.

Good luck,
Greg
