iFP battery life

OK it's pretty obvious that the battery life figures (20+ hours, who are they kidding!) quoted by iRiver for the iFP players are virtually unattainable. The impression I get from trawling through various forums is that 12 hours battery life from a 2000mAH NiMH is not unreasonable.

Obviously though there are things which affect iFP power consumption and can shorten battery life. But I haven't seen a comprehensive list/discussion of the topic, and hope we can sort some of them out here. So if anyone knowledgable on the following things can comment...

1 - Codec: CBR vs VBR. Mp3 vs WMF vs OGG.

2 - EQ: No EQ vs Presets (Rock, Ubass etc) vs DSP EQ (Xtreme, 3D)

3 - Display settings: Fancy levels display vs more static time remaining. Do scrolling ID3 tags take up much processor?

4 - Backlight

5 - Headphone volume. Does higher volume dramatically affect battery life?

6 - Music content: I'm serious here! Does really loud or busy music take more processor time to decode than simple stuff with lots of sections of silence?

7 - Random play vs fixed order

Personally, I'm very happy with the battery life on my iFP390T. I get at least 12 hours out of it, with VBR mp3s, Ubass EQ, Volume 20-25.

Anyway, lets hear your thoughts on it.

Here is my experience on your questions:

1. the big battery eater is ogg followed by anything VBR.

2, More EQ=less battery life. I play mine normal or rock and live with that.....head phnone or ear buds can play a big part of this since not all sound the same.

3. LCD's don't consume much power. no real effect with dif settings.

4. Backlight=battery killer. Lights and electric motors are power drainers since they are both in reality direct shorts.

5. Volume kills batteries. lower volume= longer battery life the coils in a earphone are electrical dead shorts

6. More related to the codec than music complexity.....VBR is tied to complexity and there goes the battery.

7. Not as bad as with a HD player.....flash is solid state remember.

hope this helps
