Ogg support limitations

Hi

I have only one question. Is the Ogg support limitation of 96-225 kbps due to hardware limitations or simply that there isn't a firmware modification dealing with this?

Seems like it's firmware-limited. Sonycman has done a mod on the UMS firmware to lower the limit to 64k (search the threads on this) and it works fine, although it probably will hit the battery life quite hard. I haven't done any tests on battery life but it's known that OGG reduces it already.

I got an reply from Iriver and they say that the bitrate limitations for Ogg is hardware limited. Possibly one can go down to 64 kbps but not up to 320 or better.

I hope newer irivers (flashbased) will have better hardware.

ogg limitation

The high limitation is of course hardware related, but the low limitation has absolutly no sense, an ogg file has almost always a variable bitrate that can go under 64. Only the average bitrate is taken in account by the original firmware, this limitation has no sense for me, except if iriver prefer to not improve too much the product in order to sell new models ... but they have to be carefull because iaudio products are a very good alternative.

iRiver isn't being entirely honest then, the high-end might be hardware-limited but we *know* the 96k lower limit is NOT.
