@WillyPao: ok...i think you have the first original FW on your iFP (this one is a bit buggy)

by UMS: if you want to Play OGG Vorbis Files less than 90kBit and record up to 128kBit/s -> use the MOD!
if you only want to use the iFP like an USB-Stick -> the latest UMS FW should be yours (i think it v 1.85)

you mean the transfer speed from PC to iFP? yeah...it's not really fast.
i think the iRiver Firmware controlls the Databus between PC and his Flash Memory...and there is some speed gone (because of controling the data)
[good example: connect your iFP to the PC...remove the Battery and the USB-Connection is gone...iFP must have a full Battery to transfer/read Data from it]

look here: IriverIfp7XXSpecs

remember: by the Orig UMS FW -> recording is limited... 96kBit/s ; OGG Vorbis from 92 - 230kBit
by the MOD UMS FW -> recording up to 128kBit/s (without Problems) ; OGG Vorbis from 60 - 230kBit

I just installed the MOD UMS on my iRiver iFP-895, but I still get the «NOT SUPPORTED OGG FORMAT»! I bought the player for the sole purpose on playing my huge Ogg-collection, but now it plays only about 50-80% of the songs I put it up to.

I've seen the problem with the bitrate; however - I thought this firmware fixed it?

They are not supposed to be below 60kbit, -- I use Q=6 anyway, - I find it very strange I actually get these problems with that setting. I'll examine some of the files that don't work, maybe I find something interesting (I once found an OGG-file that hung iHP-120 (my little brother's machine), and iRiver fixed it).

But anyway, - no new oggs worked, -- in one folder, only 4/5 didn't work, - these are all from the same CD at the same setting. I would guess at least 3-4 of those would work when it finally supports down to 60kbit.

stop! please remember: Bitrates over 230 kBit/s are not supportet!

thats the same with the original Firmware from iRiver!!!
iFP Players have a lower CPU frequency then the iHP series! (~ 60MHz)

look therefore by http://www.rockbox.org

Ahh! How STUPID of me! Of course, - maybe I've got over 230 on some of the most advanced places in the music. Why did I look down, when I had to look at the upper limit? Heh. Ohwell. That's pretty hefty re-ripping of all my CD-s in order to play them on my sweet little iRiver than

Well, thank you for letting me see the obvious pizzavernichta.

no problem shit happens

a little tip: convert your Q6 OGGs with a freeware tool to a lower quality...it's a bit faster than re-ripping from CD

I can try to make a script that does it automatic, poopy- finds the affected files and recompresses them with a smaller bitrate... However, I will loose quality on that I guess.

I want to put Rockbox on my brothers iHPpoopy-120, but I need to make time for it as we only use Linux and OS X. Can't use the easy Windowspoopy-tool. :]

Can someone modify EU firmwares?

I've been used modified UMS firmware for quite some time and really like it. But one problem that brought me back to Manager Firmware is that modified one based on US version. Apart from the well-known volume limit the EU version allowed me to tune into the station that end with .x5 which US version can't.

And my favourite stations usually in those frequency .75 .25 so I need to go back to Manager version to get decent recording option and tuner option. It'll be great if there is modified UMS Firmware that based on EU version.
Could Sonycman work something on this please?

This is tomal's patch for the EU firmware version. He put up the patch for making the firmware youself on the rockbox Ifp Port page, but not the actual firmware, due to legal reasons.

I've patched the firmware for ease-of-use for everyone. It's available here.

This firmware is 1.29EU UMS, and only has the 96kbps ogg limit removed. It still has the recording limit. You also cannot play .wma files with it, as it is modded to treat .wma files as code.

Any updates ??

Ive been using the MOD firmware and Im happy it upped the bitrate a bit... but has anyone fixed the skipping at higher rates yet ??

Most of you are wondering where to get the MOD firmware so here it please.
http://bakavic.2a1timecapsule.org.uk...ifp7xxtMOD.rar

External Mic recording at greater than 128kps is very important to me as I use it at times to do interviews. But I use the USM capabilites on a daily basis. Anyone come up with a proper solution ?

OHH.. check out my podcast at Nerdblurb.com.. thanks

which best firmware for recording?

My iFP 799 will arrive in a few days, auctioned for it because I want a small recording device which can make use of an external microphone.

I am confused about the difference of firmwares offered, don't know what MOD and UMS stand for and or what e.g. sonycman's fixes offer. There even is a rockbox in development for iFP 7xx and I don't understand if it is useable yet or not.

Please therefore anybody advice me:
which firmware should I install?
What I want is
  • possibly files transfer by drag and drop in the explorer = not having to use any special software for files transfer
  • the best recording facilities.
note that I mostly will record voices, not loud music.

( Installing a firmware will be a chalenge though as it will be my first mp3 player and I have never done anything like this, but I believe with information on this forum and maybe further help I should be able to do it. )
