IFP-799, UMS firmware - not seeing full 1GB of space

As the subject says...

New ifp-799, UMS 1.28.

Tested with both Windows 98 SE and Windows XP, sp2.

I can see about 646 MB of the space. Windows shows 352 MB free, but I can't copy any more files to the ifp-799. I see a message that says that the files cannot be created.

Any suggestions?

Does the manual mention this at the back problem pages?

Have you tried to format it?

No mention of this in the manual. No mention of UMS at all.

I tried formatting the ifp-799 as FAT. Same result.

I have gone back to the latest non-UMS firmware so I can use the full 1GB of space in my ifp-799.

This is disappointing. Is anyone who using the ifp-799 with UMS firmware able to write to the full 1 GB of space?

Is there a limit on the length of file names when using UMS?

Are there any characters that should not be used on the iRiver?

Hi Ambrose,
One of my players is a 799 and I have a full Gig. I had a problem yesterday with the 799 creating a Recycle bin which uses up the space. You can't see it on the computer but you are able to see it on the 799.

Inside the Recycle bin were all the files that I had deleted, so I formatted and Astec supplied the answer.

Just a thought cos it puzzled me - you don't see the Bin on your computer. (Like a hidden file)

That's a function of Windows; it makes a "Recycled" or "Recycle Bin" folder on all removable disks. As I recall, you can tell Windows to empty that folder (or possibly stop using it altogether) by right-clicking the drive icon. You can probably also see the folder if you enable viewing of hidden and system files in Explorer.

The problem that I am seeing with UMS firmware appears to be related to the length of the file names. I've switched back to UMS to test. Removing all non-letter characters from 169 files, I now have pushed the limit to 701 MB before I see the error.

I'll write some Perl tonight to truncate the song titles and see if that helps.

Solution!

I have learned that when you use the UMS firmware, there is a limit to the number of ~files~ that you can have in the root of the file-system.

There is, however, no limit to the number of directories.

I have created some directories; by putting my music files in these directories, I can use the full space of my ifp-799.
