change language to english on my 795(oem)

Hi All,

I hope this has not been mentioned .. I searched around the forum and did not find this problem.

I bought my unit - from Ebay and it was an OEM (in fact ebay later cancelled the auction because of copyright issues)

I have what is supposed to be a 795 - even though it does not say Iriver anywhere on the unit -

The start screen just says
"digital media mp3 player "
and when going off - version 1.71

My main screen is in english - is says "total" and number of songs .. I can see the names of the songs ... the unit works fine ...

the setup menu - has the word select ... but all the menus (and I need to change the quality settings) are in chinese (or maybe japanese)

when I plug the unit it - it is a disk on key and I can copy songs over - Does that mean I have UMS? (I thought the units comes non-ums)

So - HOW can I make this guy english? -
or in worse case how can I know what my menus say?
will a FW upgrade to an english version change it to english?
OK - HOW do I do a FW upgrade? (given that it is UMS -is it?)
the manager software will not recognize it ..
I have copied a version of the new firmware - (Us ) but I don't know how to read/see how I can install it

can anyone help me?

hey and even worse how can I be 100% sure this is the iriver unit (although it looks the same and has all the features)

Can you take a picture of your menu with a digital camera and post it up? It might be Korean, and I'm Korean myself. So post a picture, and send me a message (I might forget that I posted this thread )

A real iRiver player has the ability to change languages built in to the firmware. It would be helpful as DJ Hahn mentioned for you to post pix of the menue screens. This way we could at least guess you through the process.

Another thought is that you go to the iRiver site and download the manual for the real ifp795. This way maybe you could guess your way through the setiing menue.

As far at the uniting be the real deal......I suspect that some of the components may be real since iRiver has their production done in China at "contract mgf's" and chances are the un9it you have was a "over run" and made with bits and pieces left over from a contract run.

I just hope you did not pay too much for this flash player since the money you saved might go for chinese language lessons.

thanks guys good advice - I downloaded the real manual and was able to convert it to english from simplified chinese ....

so now I really want to understand what this OEM thing menas and if I got ripped off on ebay - at least I am now in english mode now ... I wonder if I should try to do a fw upgrade

If it works "as is" consider yourself blessed. I would forgo any firmware upgrade unless you got the unit for $5.00 and are willing to throw it in the trash if the upgrade buggers it up.

But thats me....good luck whatever you do.

my unit claims a 1.71 - is that a "real" fw number for the 795?
if all my music is mp3 and I will not be buying contnet etc. what can I gain from a FW upgrade to decide if its worth while?

I would not attempt the upgrade but if you wish to give it a shot here it is.

Should it bugger up your player DO NOT post here looking for help in resolving any problems......no one will be able to help you.
