IFP-795 keeps randomly restarting!!

Has anybody experienced this problem? I would be playing a song and they you would hear a long beep and the thing restarts? Or even when I'm shuffling through a song (only particular songs though) the the unit just restarts. Using firmware 1.25 also.

Its an awesome player but I think I might have to return it. Anybody know a fix or a firmware that works?

Thanks guys.

Are you playing vbr mp3s? This sounds like what I got with VBR mp3s that had id3v2 tags on them. It only happened on particular songs. I used tag & rename to strip out the id3v2 tags and replace them with id3v1 and everything is fine.

Sorry danimal1968, I'm not sure what VBR mp3's are?

Is there any differnence between id3v2 id3v1? Because I would really hate to spend so much money on an mp3 player that will not play particular songs. Can you just give me a quick tutorial on how to use use this program, not sure how.

Thanks.

Btw, which firmware are you using? I'm wondering if this is a problem with 1.25 only, I'm gonna see if I can revert back to an older firmware.

VBR means variable bitrate - which means the encoder can use more bits to encode more difficult parts of the song and fewer bits to encode the easier parts. It is generally more efficient than CBR (constant bitrate) because bits are used where they are most needed, whereas CBR just uses the same number of bits regardless of the music being encoded.

Id3v2 is more flexible and allows for larger fields (the album field for id3v1 is fairly small, for example).

I've had this problem with both the 1.25 and 1.28 firmwares, the only ones I've ever used.

It's hard to give a tutorial just describing it here.

Thanks for the info danimal1968, it clears up a few things here.

I was just wondering, can I convert VBR mp3's to CBR? is there a software I can download that will be able to do that? Would that possibly fix the error?

Retagging the files can be done easily and without harming your files. Converting from vbr to cbr would require transcoding, which means effectively that it would decode the file back to a wav file and then reencode using cbr. It's a bad idea as decoding back to wav does not restore what was lost. Offhand, I'm not aware of a utility that would do it, but I'm sure one exists.
