40GB Harddrive for H320?
So, I have an H320 with the stock 20GB MK2004GAL HD from toshiba. Would I be right in thinking that their 40GB MK4007GAL or MK4009GAL harddrives would be a good replacement without needing too much hackery?
The 4007 looks like being a better match, specs-wise, but also seems to be hard to find. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
the MK4007GAL will fit in the H320 without modification (i have replaced the drive in my h320 with one of those), but as you said, they are hard to find and expensive. The MK4009GAL has a different connector (ZIF), so you'd have to use an adapter. I don't know if such adapters are available somewhere. If you are not afraid of soldering you could build one yourself, see for example here: http://www.stolltech.ch/iriver.pdf

From the pictures it looks like this converts ZIF to such a connector that 2.5" drives have (too big and pins instead of holes) and also the orientation of the ATA connector would make it impossible to fit in the H320.
[EDIT] Maybe you find some solutions in this thread: Possible ZIF to 1.8" IDE adapter! 100GB iriver H140?

Hrm. One of the comments here talks about successfully using a CF card as a replacement for the hard drive, and a couple of people mention doing the same ting with older-generation iPods.
Would any adaptors or connectors be needed for this? I might have to open up my DAP tonight as have a look... (I'm already running Rockbox, so that's not an issue)

For CF cards you would need an adapter as well, but i believe those are more widely available.
There are some threads in the rockbox hardware forum about the CF card mod and there is also a wikipage: CFModGuide < Main < TWiki [edit] But be aware that the original firmware doesn't seem to work with CF cards and not all cards are supported according to the wikipage. Yeah, I've done a bit of digging, and this appears to be recommended. And for $5, it's worth a punt. When it arrives, I'll see if I can get it working with one of the 1GB cards I have lying around, and if so, it'll be time to get a 32GB card. Unless someone releases a 64GB card in the near future?
As for the original firmware, in the 18 or 20 months I've had my DAP, I honestly don't think I've booted into iRiver firmware more than twice. Maybe three times at the outside, so I'm not concerned about losing that functionality. The more I think about it, a CF card is definitely a better option than a hard drive. Faster access, lower power consumption (=longer battery life), no moving parts (=no risk of a head crash). And a 32GB card seems to be cheaper (and certainly more available) than a compatible 30GB HD. I'm quite excited about this, now...
