H340 - Broken HDD

Hello everybody...

I´m Dennis from Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany.
I read myself through this great forum after my H340 seemed to be broken.

It worked well with rockbox firmware during my 6 weeks holiday in Febuary, since it crashed a few times and I couldn't get access to my files under the original firmware. I could boot it, but there weren't any files any more.

And then there was this clicking noise and from time to time there was an interruption during playing music.

It grew worse and at least I couldn't connect the player with my computer the day before yesterday.

So I helped myself with a low level format and a fat32 partition - it worked, but the clicking noise isn't gone

I think the HDD is broken and now I want to get a new one. But it's pretty difficult to find a source where to buy it.

Does anyone know if one could use another brand like Hitashi or so to replace the broken HDD?

And is it true that I cannot use a HDD with a code like this: 60GB Toshiba MK6008AH - because of it's imcompatible ziff connectors?

http://www.vibuonline.de/product_inf...GAH/act/search

I'm really looking forward to some answers

Greets to everybody........Den nis

I haven't heard of someone using a different brand hard drive as a replacement, but there has been questions of it.

You can use a zif connector but it requires an adapter, and then it is a tight squeeze within the device. I'd suggest going IDE if you can at all.

Hello Dennis and welcome to miticriver .
AFAIK non toshiba drives have the wrong physical dimensions to fit in the iriver H1xx and H3xx. Shadesbass has a very informative post on selecting a drive here Hard Drive Selection FAQ and theres a bit more in the wiki as well Customize Your H1xx or H3xx - MisticRiverWiki
Ebay seems to be the best place to source drive , Santech has a MK4004GAH
on ebay NEW TOSHIBA 40GB MK4004GAH 1.8" HARD DRIVE W/ WARRANTY - eBay Internal Desktop, Hard Drives, Drives Storage, Computers Networking. (end time 28-Apr-08 05:09:32 AEST) .
They usually stock the
MK6006GAH drive as well but don't appear to have any at the moment.
Also , be wary of apple branded drives as they sometimes won't work in irivers.
