What’s this thread all about? Well, let me tell you how it all started! First, I read Sanitarium’s “How To: Modding The Players Outer Picture” thread, but I didn’t understand what it was about, because this mod was first posted without any pictures. After a while, Sanitarium posted a new thread, “Modded H300” which had pictures this time. I liked how people were adding pictures inside the H300’s plastic covers. I kept on watching the thread’s discussion, until Sanitarium posted a link to “SkinIt - Wolf in sheep's clothing”, and that last thread had 16 pages of skinit skins! People were making many very creative designs. However, the images were all made using imaging programs (mainly Photoshop), and no one actually posted what a modded H300 would look like with these skins (real photos). Back to Sanitarium’s post….. People started opening up their players and started to put images inside. Denny posted a picture of his H300 with a club of spades cutout under the back cover, looked sweet. Then people mentioned using the SkinIt skins for this mod, and people were curious how these would’ve looked. The problem with inserting skins under the H300’s covers is that the cover itself is tinted, and then there are all those logos and stickers. mitch66, who started the SkinIt thread, and cooleo_no1 both posted some Photoshop templates to help people with their SkinIt designs. But these weren’t enough for the inSkin mod Sanitarium posted. So I decided to make my own template! But instead of making just one template for inSkins, I decided to make various highly customizable templates for different uses. Check them out!
NOTE: I am not a professional Photoshop user! Don’t think that it’s hard to learn! The more you work with Photoshop, the more you learn. I learned a lot more about Photoshop after working on these templates! Bottom line, don’t think that this thread is only for professional Photoshop users! Chances are, you know more things about Photoshop than I do Btw, the name inSkin was created by musichound. Now for the templates! NOTE #2: The following images are NOT the templates! These images were generated using the template only as examples. Please click the links in in LARGE bold blue font to download the templete files! For firmware Skins: Instead of posting just screen shots of your new firmware skin, show off your screens in your favorite H300 variant! There are MANY options to choose from! 4 Faces:

For inSkin and SkinIt Front Cover: As mentioned above, this template is supposed to help you see how an inSkin would look like on your iRiver. This is done by using a semi-transparent layer which is supposed to give your skin the “tinted” effect, which is how it should look like under the H300’s tinted plastic cover. After viewing how the inSkin would look like, you can use the prinable template to print just the inSkin, and to know where to cut. If you plan to share your inSkin design with others here at MisticRiver, make sure you customize how you display your skin by choosing from the following options! Same as above, plus: 14 LCD displays:

Thanks Astec. I feel for you man. I was at first unsure if I should get a PMP or an H300... Who knows, maybe you (or any other PMP owner) can come up with an interesting PMP mod

That said, here are my tips. Make sure that you have the "Layers" window in Photoshop is on. To do so, click "Window" then make sure there's a tick next to "Layers". Within the layers window, click the "Layers" tab. Now you'll be able to see all the layers which are in my template. Now, there are three important things you need to know about layers. First, the eye icon. This shows you which layers are visable. You won't need to see all the layers at the same time, depending on what you want to do. For example, you won't need to display both the the Fractal and Pin Spot faces, you'd only choose one. To select which layers you want to see, just click on the layer, and the eye icon will show up. To unselect a certain layer so it won't be displayed, just click on the eye icon, and it will disappear. Second, the paint brush icon. This shows which layer your actions would be applied to. You can for example see two layers at the same time, but the actions would only be applied to the "active" layer which has the paint brush icon next to it. Third, the layer order. I beleive this is what you're having problems with. The top layers are displayed above the lower layers. Very simple. To re-arrange the layer order, simply drag the layer you want to move up or down in the layer window. Now for you, you say you want to make that printable sheet. You will need only two layers, the layer with the image you want to make into an inSkin, and the "inSkin Printable Rear/Front" layer. the layer with your image should be at the bottom, and the Printable layer should be at the top. Does this help?

After you've added your own image to a new layer in the psd file and edited it, you decide what you want to do. Generaly, you'd end up saving 2 files. One which shows how your inSkin/SkinIt/Firmware skin would look like on your H300 (with the option of choosing LCD screens, Headphones etc.). This image would only be for displaying your design. The second file would be an image of what you would actually print, and eventually cutout to insert into your player. As mentioned before, you'll need to play around with which layers are visable etc to create these two files. After you finish each image, you can "select all" (or click "ctrl A") then "copy merged" (or "shift ctrl C") then "paste" into a "new layer" (shift ctrl N), or into a totally new file (ctrl N). If you pasted the image into a new layer, click Save (ctrl S), and if you pasted into a new file, Save As (shift ctrl S). When saving a new file, you'll need to choose .psd if you want to preserve the layer settings etc. But if you want to share the image with others, you should save it as .jpg, because everyone can view jpg files (not everyone can display psd files) and they are compressed, making them small and easy to transfer. Choose the quality as needed, the images used in this thread were all saved at medium 7 quality. One more thing. The difference between "Copy" and "Copy Merged" is that copy would only copy the content of the active layer (with the paint brush icon), whereas copy merged copies the content of all "visable" layers (with the eye icon).
