CF Mod Completed

Well I modded my H120 with a CF card using a 1.8" adaptor no problem. However before I did this, my 20G hard drive had already died. From what I've read I can't do anything with this player until I have a working readable irireir partition for which to upload new images.

Can anyone confirm?

EDIT:
----------------------------
No known usb flash method exists for the early Iriver players. Must use iriver firmware to load a bootloader image into the onboard flash (not the hard drive) of the player.

Quick CF Mod Steps:

1) head to rockbox.org for a current build and using old drive, load rockbox manually or using the windows utility.
2) with rockbox booting from a microdrive obtain a 50pin 1.8" ide to CF adapter. Current trusted source is
from ebay seller "linuxbeginner".
3) types of CF cards that are known to work is largely unknown. ymmv.
4) copy rockbox onto a CF card
5) insert CF card into adapter
6) bend flat adapter jumpers
7) swap out hard drives

The iriver firmware is stored on flash memory, completely independent of the hard drive. When changing a hard drive with another hard drive, the only criteria you have to fulfill is that the new drive is formatted to FAT32. I don't know how this applies to CF though.

I haven't done the mod (yet ) , so I'm not sure , but if you dont have the rockbox bootloader flashed to the iriver firmware there may be a problem .

No alterations to the bootloader. Just did a quick format under windows, loaded the latest Rockbox files and all is golden.

Two observations:

1. Booting into stock iriver firmware gives the "check hdd connection" error but the player does eventually get there, however, you cannot access any files or navigate the player once there.

Currently had the standard iriver bootloader (v1.33) loaded in the onboard flash memory when the old hard drive died. Did the CF mod and then realized that the stardard way to get a rockbox bootloader into flash is using the iriver firmware which can only read from a working disk.

I've been scouring trying to info on doing it via usb - something along the lines of tcctool for Cowon players but I don't think it exists.

Anyone have a old drive sitting around they dont mind loaning/renting out?

iriver OF does not support CF, you need a fairly recent rockbox install, including a recent bootloader (unreleased yet)

I have bootloader v6 and mine boots up CF perfectly fine without a hitch. Using a A-Data 32GB CF. Glad to see you have your problem fixed. ^_^ I live in Northern California actually, too bad I couldn't have seen this earlier so you didn't have to buy another HDD >_<
