Smile H1xx USB charging mod

Hi everyone! I am new here...
I'm in love with H1xx DAPs. The only thing that seemed to be a little bit annoying was H1xx's inability to power from USB. DAP needs 5VDC, USB carries 5VDC. So there must have been a more elegant way of getting power from USB than a special cable.
Just thought I'd share this simple mod. Quite possible, someone did it before me, but I was unable to google it up.
So...
1) I took my H140 apart and disconnected the battery
2) took about 5cm of thin flexible wire (similar to wrapping wire)
3) soldered one end to the central pin of the power socket (circled in the picture)
4) threaded the wire between the two PCB's so that the wire came out near the usb port
5) shortened the wire to have as little excess as possble.
6) aligned the wire with pin1 (+5V, marked with an arrow in the pic) of the USB port and made the second solder joint.
7) checked for solder bridges
Grounds of power socket and USB port are already connected on the PCB, so that's it.

Oh, the foreighn object in the bottom-left corner of the pic is the 3mm chisel tip I used to do this mod.

Cheers!

Hello from another H1xx series fan. Welcome to the site.
Its great to see the interest in the h1xx series is still going strong .
I believe you may need to fit a diode to your usb charge mod.

Nothing special, a thin wire and a diode. Without the diode, the iRiver's USB will be confused when you plug in DC. The diode's negtive side goes to the center pin (+) of the DC jack. The diode should be a Schottky type for low voltage drop. I use a MBR0520LCT-ND from Digikey as I have some around. The rightest pin of the USB jack is the +5V in. You connect this pin to the DC jack center, with a diode in the middle. I put the diode below the battery connector, you can barely see it.

USB+_________+DIODE-_______DC+

So far so good. Got the battery fully charged in couple hours. This is very nice as you no longer need to plug in DC when you connect it to your computer.

Note: this picture appears MUCH larger than it actually is. The soldering is very difficult.

Just like I thought- It has been done before in a proper way =) Thanks for pointing it out.
Just tested for the "USB confusion". It's true. If I plug in the power supply and turn the H140 on, it imagines beeing connected to a PC. Behaves normal otherwise. Now I have that Shottky diode in my to-do list along with the RTC mod.

No problem , you may be interested in the boxwave cable miniSync - H120 Retractable Cable / iRiver H120 Retractable Cable / H120 USB Cable / iRiver H120 USB Cable ( Its even on special ) , if you don't want to do any more soldering . Though with your mod you can charge with any suitable mini usb lead...

The least "special" cables I need - the better. Right now I am more concerned with USB's power capabilities. The charging light is blinking while transferring files. My gut feeling is that one of theese will help. I have one at work

Now that looks suspiciously like a "special" cable .
(Just kidding ).

USB will typically only supply 500mA, compared with the original charger's 2A. When data transfer is in progress, I believe the iRiver will stop using the 500mA from the USB for charging and use it to power the hard drive instead. That is why you see the flashing charge light.

If you're going to take up 2 USB ports, you may as well use two individual cables. One for charging (e.g. like this) and one for data transfer. That way you have no special cables and no hardware mod required (although you're already halfway there with that).

Is there a cable like the one Shadesbass mentions above for the h320? I like the idea of the usb to dc plug without the little usb plug coming off of it.

Yes, and Boxwave has one too:

miniSync - H320 Retractable Cable / iRiver H320 Retractable Cable / H320 USB Cable / iRiver H320 USB Cable

With the H320, you can use that cable to charge and conduct USB transfers at the same time. I bought one from Boxwave, but it broke.

You should be able to easily find similar cables for the Sony PSP that are also compatible with iRiver players. They are also usually cheaper!

Retractable Sony PSP charge/sync cables are dirt cheap on eBay and ideal for iRiver use, I bought two and replaced the power plug with one compatable with my H140 (and coincedentally my Archos AV500), very easy to do.

After having trouble with a few other retractable USB cables that didn't transfer at USB2.0 speeds I found the retractable Sony PSP charge/sync cables work flawlessly at full speed.
I am not affiliated with this seller but bought two of the PSP cables from them: eBay Seller: gamewholesaleltd: retractable charge psp, Accessories, Video Games items on eBay.co.uk

If I recall correctly, that is the "perpetual special" price offered by Boxwave.

The charger cable (and a separate data cable) also are available at eBay U.S., saving a few bucks for U.S. folks.
