Question H120 Book Mod

Here's the deal. The screen on my iHP-120 broke a couple of years back and I've pretty much not used it since then. My music collection outgrew the 20gbs and now it's just gathering dust. Well my brother started making book bookshelves not too long back and I started thinking how awesome it would be if I put the H120 into a book. This would be my first mod and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so I'm looking to you guys.

My ultimate goal would be to have the screen embedded in the cover of the book and the remote embedded in the spine. All the appropriate ports would obviously be routed to the edges (prob. with the exception of the optical audios). I haven't decided if controls should be available via the front of the book on integrated on the spine in some way.

My first real question is the screen. Since my main screen is broken, I've already been looking around for a replacement. I know I could prob. get one used from somebody, but I noticed that the 3rd gen. ipods have the same resolution as the h120. Will it work? If so and I can replace it, is there a way to extend the LCD tape from the connector on the iriver to the cover of the book?

Wow, that's long. Just throwing some thoughts out there. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to misticriver.

Yay for instructables .

I have no idea if the screen for a ipod would fit into a iriver and don't remember anybody trying it. You could try searching over at Rockbox as they may have some specs on the two..
As for raising the screen on the h120 it is connected by a small ribbon and you should be able to lift it high enough off the board to allow it to be on the cover while keeping the mother board inside the book. Other wise you'll have to be real handy with a soldering iron .
To remove the screen you'll have to unsolder the 4 brass dowels on the corner of the screen.
Here's some links which may be handy for you.....

H1xx Internal Battery Replacement - MisticRiverWiki for disassembly instructions.

IriverHardwareCompon ents at rockbox for some board scans and the schematics for the remote (incase you want to do the control buttons separately on the book.

Don't forget to drop back and post your results (or better still a link to your instructable ).
