Smile Just replaced drive in H140 and it's running well

Hi all. On 8 November 2006, I've successfully replaced the hard drive in the H140 with a Toshiba MK6006GAH.

After putting it all back together, I connected my PC to the H140 via USB 2.0/Hi-Speed and used Paragon Partition Manager Pro to partition the drive as one large FAT32 partition of just under 60'000'000'000 bytes. Capacity shows up as 55.6 GiB. I did a surface & filesystem test on it and that turned out OK.

The drive is running fine so far and is less noisy than the Toshiba MK4004GAH that was previously in my H140. I purchased it off eBay in September 2006 for around 120 USD.

I guess my next upgrade on the unit will be either a bigger HDD or a flash solution (if such a thing would run on my unit).

Great. Now, how much does the 80-GB one cost and you have any idea on how much it will cost, say in April to May of 2007?

I actually already seen that one. 552 USD, I think it was. That's insanely high for a 20-GB increase. I say 250 USD should be the maximum on a the just-released 80-GB drive (you can get the 60-GB model for anywhere between 90 and 200 USD, depending on where and when you get it).

Western Digital - possible?

Hi,

Congretulations to all of you who have managed to succesfully replace your drives in H1x0. I was wondering, is it possible to use hard drives of other manufacurers than Toshiba? A friend of mine works in a local shop where they sell Western Digital hard drives size of 80 GB and with cache 8 MB. Do you think this could work on my iRiver H140?

Thanks a lot...

/Hazim

Is it a 1.8" or 2.5" hard drive, and does it have IDE or ZIF connectors?
As far as I know, only Toshiba have a 1.8" 80GB drive available with an IDE connector.

Hi,

Yes, it is 1.8 drive and it has an IDE connector.

Do you think it would work? I would love to try it - the price is 100 US$, and it is really valuable... And also, what does this 8 MB cache mean for the operation of the H1x0? How much cache does the curtrent Toshiba drive have?

Thank you so much for the inputs...

Hazim.

The Toshiba drives have a 2MB cache, so the firmware may need to be modified to take the 8MB cahe into account.
If the drive has the same dimensions and connector as this one, it may work.
Can you post some specifications for the Western Digital drive? I can't find any 1.8" drives on their website.

But thanks for the help...
