MK3006GAL drive only shows up as 20GB.
OK, I got a MK3006GAL hard drive off ebay (an apple branded one too) and it came today. I had no problems getting it to work and all my music plays properly. But here's my big problem. The drive only shows up as a 20GB drive and (to my knowledge) will only hold that 20GB.
The drive is DEFINTELY a MK3006GAL, I checked the sticker. I am right in thinking that an MK3006GAL is a 30GB drive, right? Now, either I'm doing something wrong, or the seller was doing a bit of sticker switching. I'm pretty sure if it is a MK200?GAL, I could get some money back due to him/her not selling me what I ordered. I'm gonna copy this message into h100 mods.

Check to see if the primary partition is using the entire drive space. If you are running XP, you can do this with the 'Disk Management" tool of the "Computer Management" console.
Additionally, you can check what model the drive is in the "Device Manager" under "Disk drives". Pony |

OK, the drive is an MK3006GAL.
I've got the disk management open, what should I do to check if it is using the maximum amount of space it should be?

I am guessing that partition G is the problem, and it is actually on the F: drive.
Never having partitioned a disk I am not much help here... I am wondering if you could provide a link to the ebay seller you bought it from? a

The unplug devices windows shows it as an MK3006GAL. It also shows up as an MK3006GAL in the device info.
Partition G: is an FAT32 partition on my external hard drive. Hard drive ebay auction - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1

Do you have a partitioning program like Acronis Disk Director... there are others but I know this one best. Many allow for a trial period. You might download a few demos and see what they report... possibly the drive was formatted as a 20GB and that's why it's all you see, with a "hidden" unformatted remainder that only shows up when you go to fully format (or when you run a dedicated disk partiton proggy).
Drive ID information can be altered, but it seems like a lot of work for the payoff of doing so, and once word got out the seller would be spurned. I lean toward checking out some other drive utilities. |
