Thinking about modding H120 to H160

O.K , I'm tired trying to find someone that'll sell me his 140 shell and I want the 60 gig of space , so I started thinking .
What if I remove the battery , mod a little hole in the back and attach it on the outside of the player , so I'll have more room for the bigger HD .
So what do youi guys think , is there enough space for it without the bat ?

Why would you want a battery on the outside. Have you got any idea on how ugly it will be?

I would never want to use a DAP with its guts hanging out.

I think the real problem is that these batteries by all acounts are pretty fragile - they're vacuum packed and you wouldn't want to pierce them. They can overheat, 'balloon' or (probably) worse if damaged. I personally wouldn't risk it.

I've been thinking about this sort of thing too.
How about modding the rear cover (or making a new one) so that it will incorporate an 8mm high drive and a battery?
The battery doesn't have to be the slimline type. It could even be 3 high capacity rechargeable AAA's. (The battery type would obviously determine the shape of the rear cover though)

Which is exactly what you were doing, and is not permitted. I even stated that the sale has finished months ago, and as such would be no use to anyone looking to purchase an H140 shell (which is the only sensible way to convert your H120 into an H160 btw).

5 genuine posts shouldn't be difficult to achieve, considering the number of topics discussed at MisticRiver.
The 5 post rule is to stop spammers from accessing the Buy/Sell/Trade forum and advertising their wares. By posting like you did you attract the attention of the moderating staff as being a potential spammer.

This topic is not up for discussion. The rules are there for a reason.

Back to the topic in hand, apart from sourcing an H140 shell, the only other alternative I can think of would be to use an external battery pack and remove the internal battery. This should give you enough room to fit a dual platter drive into an H120 shell, although even that may not be possible as the dual platter drives are an extra 3mm and the standard batteries are less than 3mm thick I think.

Success! I have successfuly installed a 60 GB hard drive in to my H120. To make this fit i removed the battery to accomidate the hard drive that is 3mm larger than the stock Hard drive. I have the battery attached to the back side of the Mp3 player. I have this all enclosed in the standard iRiver case so it doesnt look that ugly. The hard drive i used was a Toshiba MK6006GAH.

Cool . Got any pics? And did you have to remove the padding?

no pics of it happening, but i will post a finall pic later.
I didnt have to remove any padding, i took the padding from the orignal harddrive and put it on the new one. It fit well, wasnt rattling around and it wasnt to tight. As i said, it is ugly and realy big, but its 60GB!!!

Colin, you're asking for trouble. This is a really horrible idea IMO, as you might risk:

Exploding the battery
harming yourself
harming someone else.

If you manage to somehow drop your DAP, and it lands on something which can potentially puncture the battery seal, you might see it catch on fire, or perhaps have the innards come flying out of the iRiver case and land on someone's skin.

I really don't think that this sort of thing should be encouraged at all, as there's a very good reason why batteries are not made to be like that, and are very well protected in their alloy cases.... In fact, I think it's pretty irresponsible to do such a thing, because you CAN hurt someone.

I appreciate your concern, but i don’t care. I think that you are exaggerating the risks that come with lithium ion batteries. As i said, the iriver is enclosed in the leather case which is just as thick as the iriver shell. (yes, i know that it isn’t metal) I am willing to take the risk of having a dangerous mp3 player.
As for a risk to others, and being "irresponsible"....g et a grip!
As for me encouraging it.... I simply asked on a forum for help with a mod. I am not advertising it, if ppl are looking to mod their H120 then go for it I am proof that it can be done, and im sure that other ppl have done the same mod. So go for it people, that is unless the battery police get to you first.

Heck you would probably be safer in taking the rubber seal between the hd and battery out than risking leaving it on the outside, I know of one person at least who tried this with success. I took a h120 shell swapped the 'rubbers' (blue pads inside) and the side panel with the built in mike around from a h140 to my h120 and added in a MK40 to get a 40 gig silver and gray H140. (It could easily of been a 60 GB one since they are the same size.)

The reason i did put a 40GB in was that i didnt have one, i had a 60gb that a friend gave me. BTW they are not the same size the drive i had was 3mm thicker then the 40GB, this is because it is a double platter drive. So that is what i had to work with. Because of the size of this drive I could not fit it even if i took all the padding out. The only way to make this thing fit was by removing the battery. I tryed alternative means such as getting an H140 shell to accomidate a larger drive but couldnt. The battery removal was the only way i could see to accomplish the goal, reviving my mp3 player.

I am still not concerned with the mp3 player as the leather case covers the entire battery, except a small edge on the top that is visable.

Trust me, if the iriver explodes i will post, and i will post a picture too.

The 40Gb drive is a dual platter too (8mm high). That's why the H140's are thicker than the other H1xx series.
Unless you've managed to get your hands on one of the new 40Gb single platters...
