Success in upgrading Hard Drive
Hi Mistic Folks,
Wanted to share my story.. After dropping my beloved h140 and knackering the hard drive, I decided this was the ideal time to try upgrading to a 60gb hard drive. I bought the Toshiba MK6006GAH from dabs.com. Taking apart the player is easy if you have the right screwdriver, sadly I'm not techie enough to tell you which size. I'm sure you'll figure it out. When the player was apart I (gently) pulled the protective rubber surrounding the hard drive away. Then I disconnected the drive, sounds tricky but is really simple. Simply slide the drive towards the top of the player. It's just as simple to slide the new drive back in. The next part was when I started tearing my hair out. To save you this stress I'll tell you what I eventually did. The drive must be formatted to Fat32 otherwise it won't work. Sadly Windows doesn't do this for drives over 32gb. I downloaded a fab little utility called SwissKnife to be found here: http://www.compuapps.com/Download/sw...swissknife.htm This will format your drive to Fat32. HOwever there is one more catch if you want to get Rockbox working. The drive must have a primary and NOT an extended partition. That's it. I now have an Iriver h160 with rockbox! Have fun. |

And I'm planning on doing an 80GB upgrade to my H140 in the not-too-distant future as well. I haven't taken the unit apart before, but it doesn't look to be all that complicated of a procedure.
Congrats on the H160 with Rockbox

Just to report on a search today: the Toshiba MK6006GAH 60GB drive is available for $186.50-$190 shipped in the U.S., at various sites in and outside of California (so that you can avoid taxes . . .).

Yeah, gonna do the 80 gigs thing too. I'll have to figure out how to do it with Linux.... Cuz I hate Windows with a passion.
I've opened up my DAP only twice. The second time things weren't going my way. I kept dropping the screws. Every time I dropped one, I'd find it, and it'd be fine. Then eventually I lost the smaller ones that go on the side panel. I spent 2 hours looking for it with no success. Then the next day I came home, and just stood at the door and was staring at the floor and noticed a familiar shape. |

to my knowledge 80 gigs won't come out until May 8, 2007. That's of course speculations, toshiba hasn't said anything, but a lot of people are predicting that date based on trends. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's released sooner than that though.
