Post HD Upgrades for H1xx and H3xx Series DAPs

I'm editing the first post in this thread, because the REAL HD's have been found and installed by our friends in Germany. Here's the info as posted by Seadzz:

Looks like our friends in Germany have been successful upgrading H320 and H120 to 30GB HD. They will be offering this HDD for sale starting tomorrow. They have also located a source for the 60GB HDD used in H340 and H140 and will be making those available within a few weeks. Great news for those owners that want more room....doesn't everyone?

iriverlounge

Seems it is just a matter of opening up your player poping in the new HDD and formating the drive to FAT32 using the Windows Format function. I suspected as much and posted that some time back. I for one am thrilled at the news and will be upgrading my player.

My hat's off to our German friends for having the "right stuff" to make this happen. Shows us all how much power the internet has.

not sure, you would need to check the size and power consumption at the very least.

I suggest you look at the posts regarding changing the drive as there are some specific problems and as yet I have to hear of anyone having success at switching one drive for another.

at least the last 30gig toshiba http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storag...odel=MK3006GAL should fit perfectly, same power consumption and one platter like the 20gb version

afaik nobody has tried yet. many of the h1xx are now out of warranty, so maybe some of their owners will hive it a crack.

Yes but the fact remains that the device may not accept other drive sizes, plus there is the issue of like on US models where they loose DRM on upgrade no one knows what would happen

Tell us your results on this. I'm in the process of re-moulding an entire new shell for my old IHP-120 champagne model, (am trialling out alumilite clear so i have a transparent case). If the IHP-120 can recognise larger capacity drives, then I'll probably just re-mould a larger shell to fit the larger HDD.

as far as i can tell nobody has tried. a 20 should recognise the 40 as they have the same firmware, so it is likely that the 20 will recognise the 30, but will the 40 recognise the 60?

and how much room do 9999 (file number limit) 192k mp3s take up? is this more than 40gb?

What? How is changing a disk drive on an H1xx like changing the firmware on a US H3xx ??! No-one knows if it will work (because no-one has tried) but changing the hard drive will not change the features of the firmware (software and hardware are two different concepts, right?). The only way we're going to find out what happens is by trying

Oh man, do this! This is a great opportunity, and the community would hugely appreciate the info!

Let us know how you get on with this (it's something I've considered too .. moulding a 3mm spacer shell to fit between front and back cover.. and something for the top/bottom too but not sure what...)

Got ourselves a little confused here boys... We're talking about the H100 Series... No DRM present and it would only be effected by firmware anyways.

Waiting to see your results I'm very very interested in buying a fitting 40Gig HDD for my iHP120 when it's available... Will also buy a high capacity battery... Anyway I'm also concerned by the rockbox iRiverport progress before upgrading my iHP...

hi tang,

i am afraid i wont test it. the thing is that i had the choice between an i120 and i140. my first idea was to keep the 40gb and thus built in dapstore's 2000mah battery. when i wrote my reply i changed my mind to keep the 20gb because i loved its slimness (as i still do right now) but i in the end i finally chose to sell my i120 (need that disk space). its still warranty on it and it makes no sense to exchange harddrives just for fun (not to forget the risk to damage it)

i am very sorry...but i reckon it will definitely recognize the 40gb drive because the hdd is the only distinguishing feature between the two players. anyway i am quite sure there wont be any 40gb single platter drive within the very next future, toshiba just increased the storage density by their last released 30gb and 60gb drives. the more interesting question is whether it will recognize these two new drives. both have sizes which are not originally supported by firmware respectively does its firmware takes care of the players hdd size!?

This has been discussed before. We don't yet know what limits are set by the firmware, on what drives can be attached. For example, it's entirely possible that the firmware checks the make and model numbers of the drives and refuses to boot if they don't match the expected value (Toshiba 20GB or Toshiba 40GB). I personally think that's unlikely but nobody's spent time looking at the firmware code to check yet (and I also personally think it's a waste of effort to start looking now ...). Easiest way to find out is to just try it!
