I bought my 60gig and 30gig drives from Span.com They have great service and the best price currently. Here's a link:

http://www.span.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=23_504

The 30gig Toshiba Drive is: Toshiba 1.8" ATA6 MK3006GAL
It's a single platter drive that fits perfectly in the iHP/H120.

I'm so jealous. Why did they create a 30 but not 40 gig single platter, when there's a 60 ? Wah wah wah. I want 40 gigs !

They're still very expensive (20Gb is anyway). It would make sense that since Toshiba are selling immense numbers of these things to Apple, iRiver etc. The price should be fairly reasonable (demand & supply). Not much we can do about it I guess, the "new" 20Gb replacement I got for my flatmates H120 to replace the one I killed when I dropped it is making unpleasant chirping noises, so I'm picking it's going to die any day now. I'll have to see if I can replace it with a 30Gb version.

Don't think I can justify stuffing a 60Gb into my H340 though

Wow - I just looked at their shipping charges. Dear lord...

Airmail RoyalMail Airmail postage to NZ : 0.06kg NZ$30.89
DHL courier to NZ : 0.06kg : 3-4 days NZ$249.68
Fedex courier to NZ : 0.06kg : 4 days NZ$182.75
Citylink courier to NZ : 0.06kg : 4-5 days NZ$257.40
Citylink Express to NZ : 0.06kg : 2-4 days NZ$205.92

USD is roughly 2/3 of NZD.

How big is the box they put that little drive in!?

eWiz.com has the MK3006GAL for $114.33. I spoke with a support person there, and she said that they are in stock. eWiz has a 4.5 out of 5 star merchant rating at PriceGrabber. I ordered one today. Hopefully I'll have it by mid next week.

I'm happy to report that eWiz does indeed have them in stock. Ordered on Tuesday using the UPS 2nd Day Air option and it arrived today, Thursday. It is indeed the correct drive. Total Price: $128US shipped.

If you need to save a "little" money ($5US) you can opt for the ground shipping which is $8.

Anyone found anywhere that stocks the MK4007GAL yet? (Long shot, since it was only announced by Toshiba a few days ago, so I'm guessing Apple have already bought the capacity...)

So, will the MK3006GAL -30 gig format onboard on an h120 (via firmware), or is a another utility needed? If not.....I suppose XP would work since it's less than 36 gig?

My past reading on mistic hasn't confirmed this one way or another yet.

why not just check Pricegrabber.com?

PriceGrabber returned cheaper prices for both the 30 and 60 gig drives. I believe the merchant was NewEgg. $208 for the 60 gb drive, mk6006GAH (I think) shipped.

I'm thinking that since more and more sources for the desired drives are popping up, this thread could use a bit of consolidation, as it's becomming a bit unkempt. If anything, I'll create a new general hd thread for discussion of installation/partitioning etc, and keep this one (OR visa versa) as the relevent buying guide source.

Also, I know this guy (who I'll be visiting today) who works at a mom/pop computer shop, who might be able to help procure us some of the not yet released drives as well as the already distributed ones. I'm hoping he can get us a better rate than the ones going, which might be a possibility if we can get a certain amount of orders.

Then again, he may not be able to do diddly squat for us. I'll let you all know later.

ALright, if I install a new HD, and format it using PM or something, the iRiver FW will boot up anyway, right? I'm assuming the FW is on flash memory somewhere?

I just had a great idea! if we could somehow get our hands on h340 back cases would they fit on the h320s and be able to fit a double platter drive? If anyone has a broken h340 out of warranty PLEASE dont throw it away The player may be broken but the back case could mean upgrading someone's h320 to a h340.

Any news on where we can buy the single platter 40gb yet?

i was just looking at the MK8007GAH which is 80gigs on a double platter, with 40gig per platter:
http://www.span.com/catalog/product_...oducts_id=6016

its still not out, only thing is, the drive only has a 2mb buffer, will that mess it up? i could live with a 60gig drive in my h140 (40 gigs sucks!, since i love my audio books and recording uni lectures, and also my symphonies, radio interviews etc, as well as typical rap etc @ 192kbs), but 80gig would be ideal since it would leave me some space so the drive isnt always completely full which will probably help with startup times, and is a nice backup for if i want to transfer large files using my h140.

so will a 2mb buffer mess it up? if i upgrade, it wont be till after january, assuming the iriver warranty is only for one year

I don't think it would mess it up but I believe this will force longer seek times for the hard drive to fetch your music files.

The drive in the H140 has a 2MB buffer, so there won't be any difference.
