Definitely go for the 80GB if you can get it for £100. Cheapest I've seen is £150 off eBay (new).

No the MK8009GAH is NOT the same as the MK8007GAH. The 8009 uses a ZIF connector which is not directly compatible with the H140 (IDE connector). This is all in the Hard Drive FAQ (link in my signature).
Some people have succeeded in making adapters, but it looks tricky. Search/browse the forums for more info.

I had a look round your FAQ, and I figure ordering a 60gig (80gig is truly impossible to find) from an American retailer is probably going to work out cheapest. At nearly £70 tho, I find myself wondering if I should just save my money and wait to get a new player. Only choices would be Ipod Video (urgh), Creative Vision M, or an Archos...

£70 is reasonable IMHO. The two things that usually require replacing after a few years are the hard drive and the battery (provided you look after your player and don't fry it with the wrong charger). The hard drive is by far the more expensive of the two.

If you are happy with your H140 then why bother buying a new player? Personally I've never needed more than 20GB of music at any one time, but if the capacity of your player is the only limiting factor, a hard drive upgrade is the route I would take if I were you.
The one main advantage of buying a new player over a bigger drive (apart from the obvious of having a new player) is that you'd get 1 or 2 years warranty on the whole player, rather than just the drive.

But the 80gig is truly impossible to find new. And I'm not paying that much for something that's second hand.

I'm gonna keep shopping around though, try and find a cheap UK site so I don't get taxed.

Reason was, here in South Korea, the Toshiba MK8007GAH are readily available and lots in stock unlike many other contries where members here seem to live. I dont want to spam the forums with this info. Just wanted to help out anyone who is having a hard time getting one. Price is reasonable I think. Around 150 pounds includding the shipping and insurance and tracking number. The drives are sealed and new. I looked on EBay and there seems to be not many or none at all. To avoid duties, I can write on the package that its a gift. I found this way it helps a lot. Thru my own experience, the hard way

I was considering moving to a RockBoxed IPod (the new 160GB or the 80GB classic) after having had my H320 for so long that it is bursting at the seams; but then I read at the RockBox forum (new ipods - rockbox port proposal) that they have different hardware and firmware and that it isn't likely they'll support RockBox in the near future... Bummer!

In the same thread, though, some people debated the likeness of the new players Hard Drives to the ones used by the iRiver H series. This might really open an alternative upgrade path, especially if it's true for the larger capacity drives... Can this be confirmed? Can anyone elaborate?

yeah....One Week ago I ordered an IPOD MK6006GAH drive for 100 dollars. Yesterday I received the Ipod HD in good condition.

And the IPOD HD (with ipod logo on the HD label) works great in my H160 ! He's also much silencer then my old MK4004GAH HD.

I also updated the battery to 2200mAh (also ipod battery). 27 hours of playback time is really really really niceeee.

Hello everyone. So I've been thinking about upgrading the HDD on my H140. I've been looking around for a bit and it seems like 60 gig HDD's are the highest capacity available? I'm not sure because some of the info seems to be outdated. Also, is there anyone currently producing IDE - ZIF connectors so that ZIF's can be used in irvier DAP's? Thanks.
