:edit: it appears that somebody else already pointed that out.. i just bought an h320, and I really don't like it. my ihp 120's drive died, it said check hdd connection, so i did, i removed it and reattached it several times and it still wont work, and the wire connections seem fine.. so i think after countless falls the hd finally got fried. i'm ready to plop down 120 or however much it is for a new 20gb or whatever i can get that's single platter and larger than 20, but how would i go about making it work with the player? would the player automatically create the partitions it needs to hold firmware? can someone who's swapped out drives explain exactly what i need to do here? and can someone also tell me how i can be completely sure if my old 20gig drive is dead. if it isnt maybe the connector's just screwed and all i have to do is some soldering.. thanks Last edited by Austin M. : March 21st, 2005 at 01:28 AM. |

I am a H140 owner, but i dont really use the full 40GB. i was thinking, maybe i could replace my 40gig double platter with one of toshibas 30 gig singe platter drives, and stick a MASSIVE capacity battery in
anyother gadgetery you think would be good? might be possible to stick a small headphone amp in? lol

i see an option to test wether your current drive is still vital or not. there are already cases for 1,8" drives on the market (i.e. check eDUMP) just build it in there and see what will happen... @monkey my teacher at school would have stated "missed the topic" OUR topic is " H140 using 80gb 3.5" drive" and not "i have too much free disc space on my ihp and dunno know what to do with it"

internal format option?
well let's say i order this drive sometime soon and install it, what exactly would i have to do to get it working? I really have almost no experience with modding anything, so this would be a nice experience for moi |

The player can only read files from the first fat32 partition on the drive.
I am sure most drives come allready partitioned so it is just a matter of formating the drive. Unfortunatly microsoft don't want you to format large drives with fat32 so you need to format the drive with win98 or find another way to format. Win 2k and xp can't format drives bigger than 32gb with fat32. Trying to get the player to format itself (internal format) didn't work with my 80gb drive. It just said format error. Since the firmware only has to deal with two different drives they proberly cut a lot of corners to keep the size of the firmware down and so it won't work with any other drives. |

Win XP wont let you format the drive but external programs like partition magic will allow you to, you can usually get free programs or 30day trials etc.

I did the same thing to test a "broken" iriver. Thanks to the winch for the inspiration!
You have to start by getting a female connector that is the same as the 1.8" hdd female connector. You can get it from either a broken 1.8" drive, or a CF card you no longer need, or a pcmcia card that you no longer need. I used a pcmcia card. I opened it and cut the circuit board near the connector, then cut some of the connector off caus eit has more pins than you need. After that you need to solder a crapload of pins to an existing IDE cable. Look at the pics in the first post to get an idea to how the pins map. Good luck! I can post pics of my adapter (similar to the winch) if it will help |
