H120 Docking Station
Hey guys.
I'll be gettin an H120 pretty soon, finally. I noticed tho that some people have made docking stations, so when my ihp (H) 120 gets here i m gonna hopefully do a step by step instruction thingy with pics explaining how i made it, and maybe it'll be allowed to be put in the faq. The parts you'll need are available at something like Radioshack. They'll be stuff like the actually dock (aluminum box of some sort, pic included) your usb wire (you can use the one you got with yours, or if u want to be safe get one from iriver) also the ac adpater charger ( can use the one u got, or to be safe get one from iriver) and some other stuff, in mine im gonna include a switch which you can use if u want to transfer files and not charge or tranfer files and charge, or just charge, im deciding on this, but it'll most likely be a push button. Plus some glue and stuff. But this'll all be included in my step by step process. Hopefully my h120'll get here soon so i can make my docking station, but it might take a while, so don't hope for it on here by next week, it may be on by late August maybe. Any suggestions if i should do like pdf format or somethin else? |

I know lots of people have been waiting for a good walkthrough, and I will include the line in/out cable (even though I would've anywayz). But you guys are just goin to have to wait maybe a month or two, i kno it sounds like a lot, but when it's done, you'll be glad 4 the wait, cuz if it was only like a week it might be crappy (unless u worked on it like 6 hrs a day 4 a week) but since it's the summer, it might only be a month 2 at the latest.

CompDude-- Thanks for taking this on. Even your supplies look sexier than the dock for the latest iRiver (sorry, iRiver, but it's true!). What really would be helpful would be if this all can be done from stock Radio Shack parts so that even us electrically-challenged folks can build it ...

here's a BIG list of all push-switches from mouser. use the bookmarks tab on the left side, look under "pushbutton", they are grouped by manufacturer
http://www.mouser.com/catalog/618/896.pdf will you be using this switch for power?

CooLJoE, Because if it's 80% full you don't want to charge it. It's not good for the battery to be charged more times than necessary.
BTW, I made a dock with a power switch and a sepparatable ac-adapter, its in this (MODS) forum with some horrible pics.

aight im gettting a 120 this week and im gonna attempt to make a dock too...sorta like yours and clevetus' but i want plugins in the back so dont have to keep the cords connected to the dock...
the thing i need to know is, is it possible to cut a usb cord and then add the end to it, to shorten it? ...also, can u buy a part which is the same as the usb port on the actual player? basically is there an "extention" cord i can buy cheaply....but it needs to be very short cuz it just has to run from the back of the dock and up into the player....... hope u understand what i mean oh yea i would need these parts for the power supply also, is it possible to buy those somewhere? i dont need a whole new adapter, just a little extension for the wire and plug... |

I did'nt implement USB support for my dock as I don't need it but i did make a "plugin" or a socket in the back for the ac-adapter. But i live in sweden so I bought a new plug and a new socket and just got some wire separated by the power switch so that power can be turned on and off as you don'nt always want to charge your player just cause it's in the dock! Anyways, I live in Sweden and I suppose you live in the US so this is what I would get: http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...%5Fid=273-1641 along with the propper plug. As for the USB, there are some problems. You can probably find the propper plugs but when you start soldering all the leads for the USB plugs you'll get trouble. It's apparently very hard to get it right as USB is very sensitive on how well everything is connected. Some guy from germany who is trying to build the very same type of dock as you tried and the USB transfers ended up kinda bad. What you need to do is try to find the proper extension cable and NOT cut it!
