H10 Sudden Death

My H10 did something rather strange. Usually I would plug it in and go. I have been using WMP11 and J River media occasionally. Both work pretty good (JRiver a little better). Anyway I plugged in my device after about a month or so and got this hardware installation problem. It identifies the IRiver and then searches for drivers for the MTP device. It then gives me this message " There was a problem installing this hardware". I never had this problem before.

The only correlation I know of is I had a marathon software downloading and was loading and unloading stuff by the gigs. Any help would be much appreciated.

Contacted IRiver and reloaded system files and firmware updater, exactly as the instructions I was given, over and over, ad infinitum, ad nauseum!!! They are no longer responding to my e-mails.

Can anyone help???

Try uninstalling the H10 device drivers -

go to Control Panel, System (you may have to click "switch to classic veiw to see this - top left hand side of the window) - then go to the hardware tab, then device manager.

Scroll down to Portable Devices" and hopefully you should see "IRIVER device".

Right click, uninstall.

Remove the iRiver H10, and then reboot the computer.

Try connecting the H10, and the drivers for the H10 should be freshly installed.

Hope this helps, if not, let me know what happens and I'll try and help som more.

P.S - I assume that you're running XP, and the device is the MTP version - not the UMS - if it isn't, please edit the original post so that other users as well as myself are in no doubt

Regards, Rastaman25.

Okay, I did that and it did not work. Is it possible that I am missing something in XP that should be there. I have SP1 and SP2, but could I have damaged something in there, or inadvertantly removed something.

Have you tried using the H10 on another computer?? That way, we could define whether or not the problem is within the H10 itself, or your computer.

I'm not honestly sure what else to try, I will keep thinking. Does the H10 show up at all in "My Computer"? Also, is the H10 showing any error messages such as "System Files Missing"?

I have not tried another computer, but I will today. I am not getting the "missing system files" message. Last night I rolled my WMP from 11 to 10 and still the computer is having problems loading the MTP device.

What's happening when I plug in the H10 is everything I described in the 1st post, and after it fails to install MTP, it shows the h10 as I: drive, but gives it a DVD icon and says its not accessible. Its very strange. The guys at IRiver, when they would talk to me, said they never heard of that before.

I love this player. It has better sound than any player I have ever had, or heard, and that is the important part of a mp3 players' function to me.

It worked perfectly before I tried to hook it up again after a month. This really is an unusual occurrance and I hope I can get some guys on this site to get involved. I will try the other computer today and report back. Thanks for checking in with me Rastaman.

Well, it sounds like a driver problem rather than a problem with the player itself, so let me know what happens on the other computer - I suspect it should connect fine, but if not, I will admit, I'm slightly flumoxed! If you find that the H10 will connect fine with the other PC, I suggest you could try using the System Restore tool in windows - found under Start Menu, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools - and revert to a backup from before the problem started - this may reset the driver issues for you.

Regards Rastaman25.

Okay, I could not get the other computer to try, so I fooled with it until I did the UMS conversion and everything started working. Now I can't get music onto it, or rather when I do it's not showing it on the h10 after I disconnect from the computer. I have easy h10, but I really don't know hom to use it. Do you have any other suggestions, or can you direct me to a good thread???

Hi, congratulations!

Did you use the Emergency connect method - which is where you remove the battery, reinsert it, and hold down the "o" key whilst powering on connected to the usb?

Or did you actually convert the firmware from the MTP version to the UMS version, which is quite a bit more complicated?

As for playlists, there are many threads here that will show you the answer to that paticular question, I shall have a look in a moment for you... but I personally beleive that you can simply make a playlist on the computer, and then copy it into the playlist folder on the H10. Then, when you update with Easy H10, the playlist should be accessible on the device. I've never used playlists myself so I wouldn't know!

Really glad you've managed to sort out your problem!
