I've had my 20gig h10 for over 2 years now and I love the thing and never had any problems. This whole time I've even been using the stock v1.0 firmware, mainly because I've never had any problem and never had any need to upgrade. I use it pretty much a daily basis and take good care of it. I used it just today on my bike ride to work and it worked perfectly fine just like usual. I go to change the volume or whatever and the touchpad suddenly has a mind of it's own. I go to turn up the volume to about 30 or so but when I let go of the touchpad it doesn't stay at where I let go and it jumps back a few notches. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but trying to navigate through the menus or select a specific song is almost impossible. I've updated the firmware to v2.51 with the iriver updating program and it's still the same bullshit. It took me like 5 minutes just to get to the settings menu to change the scroll speed and I put it at the lowest (1x) and it's still horrible. As far as I know, there has been no damage done to it so, there's no appearent cause for this to be happening. I have no idea what to do, I'm seriously considering throwing it against the wall and just going to bestbuy and splurging on a Zune. But, I don't really have $250 to piss away with college expensises and all. PLEASE HELP! and thank you in advance!
Long story short: 1. Had a H10 20gig with v1.0 firmware and worked fine for 2 years. 2. Suddenly the touchpad goes back a few notches from where you leave it the second you let go without it being touched, making it impossible to navigate. 3. Updated to v2.51 and it still does the same thing. 4. Thinking about throwing it against the wall and buying a Zune. 5. Anxiously awaiting help from the knowledgable people from this forum. |

Thanks devyanks, I appreciate the advice. I don't usually mind opening stuff up since I work on my computer all the time. I just don't know if I want to mess around with something so small and fragile. Or do I not need to worry about that?
Something else weird also started happening with it now. Sometimes the touchpad just won't work period. Making my H10 even more useless. I guess if there is something wrong with the connection that would explain it not working at all sometimes. But, it will work (barely) sometimes, then suddenly not work at all. I'll shut it off, turn it back on, and then it starts working a little bit again. It's acting very strange. It might be blasphemy to say this on this forum but, I've been doing some research and appearently the Zune pretty much sucks. So, I'm seriously considering conforming to the mainstream and just buying a 30gig Ipod since I found one new for only $229 with free shipping. That is unless you guys can talk me out of it... |

i did not know you could put rockbox on an ipod. Do you still have to use stupid itunes if you use rockbox? also, what are the advantages to using rockbox over the stock firmware? other than the obvious custumability.

You can still use iTunes with Rockbox, as long as you use the database. Otherwise your MP3s are hidden under really complicated folders randomly. Rockbox finds them and categorizes them by tag, but can't play DRM-protected music.

Yes, you can quite easily delete stuff inside Rockbox, but the iPod's database won't be updated until you sync with iTunes again (And choose to remove the song form the iPod), or use some other iPod database update method that scans songs.
