Hard Drive Failure?

Hey, I'm having yet another weird problem with my 6g H10 player. At first, I thought it was the System files missing problem resurfacing, but I handled it (again). Now, whenever I try to put ANYTHING on the H10, Windows complains about a "disk write failure", stops transferring files, and says that the H10 has 0 bytes of disk space left. If I try to turn the H10 on, the player seems to be stuck in a loop, as if it can't access something it needs (HD?). This problem only surfaces after a minute or two, so XP will recognize the H10 properly. I am afraid, because to me, it seems that the HD is close to it's grave.

Please tell me i'm wrong (of course, only if I'm truly wrong).

Thanx.

Thoroughly Confused

It seems like my H10 is behaving itself...dunno why...or if anything was even wrong to start off...

Dunno if this will help, but I ran chkdsk on the H10 HD while it was in UMS mode. Also, I defragged the HD, formatted it, then ran the recovery console. These procedures seem lightweight, so I don't think anything was wrong(Despite the fact chkdsk found "lost chains").

The whole problem was probably caused by XP flipping out on me, doing the random stuff Windows has always done.

This may be too early to talk, because I am still putting music on the H10. will update if the H10 explodes again. good luck everyone else.

Well, mine still isn't. The hard drive is still making strange noises when I switch the player on, and it never reaches the main menu - it just sticks at the "system files missing" message or, if it's plugged into my computer, at the "USB connected" screen (even after I disconnect it).

Thanks, iRiver...

that doesn't sound good...

When that happened to me the 1st time, I had to disassemble my H10 and tend to the HD. somwhere on thsi forum is the website on how to disassemble the H10. I'll find it 4 u.

Did u try to format the Hd using computer management? does it even show up? if the answer is no, then u probably need to disassemble.

Go Here

The translation is shifty at best, but still understandable. if u don't have T5 screwdriver, a very small flathead screwdriver may be able to take the place (that's what I used).

If u dropped ur h10 on the ground, and it took a mean bounce, then this will fix whatever ails u. good luck.

(for some reason this first quote won't format properly...)

I know about that post - I've seen a few tutorials describing how to free the hard drive "arm".

I haven't tried using computer management, but if I try right-clicking on the drive and selecting "format", then nothing happens. If I try using the "format" command in a DOS window, I get an error, so I doubt the computer management console will help, but I'll try that sometime.

Yeah, I saw that one, like I said above, but I'm not sure it's worth my time sourcing a couple of tiny screwdrivers when I could either go back to using my phone (with it's 1GB memory card) or get a little flash-based 2GB player for not much money. No way am I buying a hard-disk-based player again: I have friends who have had numerous problems with iPods, but I thought iRiver devices would be more reliable - not so, apparently. Maybe their bigger devices, the h3xx series, are more reliable - I've seen good reviews of those, but I really want something smaller, like an H10!

Anyway, thanks for your help.
