Is this a lost cause?

I have searched for help already and can't find a similar problem. Am hoping some of you wonderful young people can help me; maybe you will just go ahead and put me out of my misery.

My daughter brought her H10 20 gb to me last night and I was horrified. When she turns it on, I hear fast clicking sounds (I think the hard drive), the display reading "Down" (the volume). That's all it will do. I tried to reset it. I managed to get it back to the normal start situation. You can choose Music, Artists, etc. with the black buttons, but once you get to using the keypad for up and down, it will only let you choose "down" and eventually gets stuck again.

I'm sure it has been dropped sometime in the past (probably more than once). Boo-Boo kitty has probably pushed it off the bed too!

Ideas, anybody?

Commander

I'm pretty sure that's the HD going the way of the Do-Do.... There is a guide somewhere for replacing it in the H10....

Thanks, BBD for confirming what I already suspected. I'm technically challenged, so replacing the hard drive isn't something I'd take on. It sounds like more than it's worth. My daughter might just have to get herself something a little less likely to be harmed by user carelessness now that she has a JOB!

Or...MR has a repair service for such things. I'm not sure of the price, but it's an option for you.

However, if it's a new player, I suggest she go with one that has flash memory, not an HD.

The clicking sound could also be the touchstrip stuck in the down position. Could be a dent or piece of dirt or god knows what. Difficult to fix as well.

But as BBD said it could be the HD. Can you feel any vibration which would indicate more of a HD problem?
