Question US h10 5gb is overheating when plugged in and wont hold a charge

Hi All,

I recently bought a refurbished US h10 5gb on ebay. I'm having issues getting it to work.

When i plug it in to charge, the player heats up very quickly. I opened the player and it seems to be coming from the connector and moves along to the rest of the board. I bought a replacement battery and this has not made any difference.
As a result the player wont work, I have left it charging despite the heat and although it will work for a little while, it doesnt seem to hold a charge. I am worried that too much heat will destroy the player.
I have updated the firmware to the most recent version and this has not helped either.
It is a US version however I am from Ireland. I am using the supplied AC charger along with a suitable adaptor. I dont believe this should make a difference but I dont understand why its not working? could this be the reason?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

i think you've fried the player, European power is 220V and American is 110V. the player is not meant for European power. the charging circuit was probably melted. your player is dead.

Ive opened the player up and nothing is fried, no signs of any burning/melting at all.
I understand the difference in voltage however I have bought several US electrical goods such as other mp3 players (rio karma) and digital cameras and they all work fine, why is the iriver different?

As long as you used an adapter, it shouldnt have been fried. Otherwise, any American made product used by businessmen in Europe would be fried too.

agreed, so whats going on with it?????
If i leave it charge for any extended period of time it gets really hot, I know that this cant be good for it so I dont want to risk frying the player,
Has anyone else had this issue?
I have tried to contact iriver support but they have given me no assistance, bit of a bad joke really....

Did you use an "prong" adapter or a voltage converter? Did you look to see what the voltage RANGE was on the power supply? Some power supplies are rated at 110v AND 220v (or thereabouts). Others however are ONLY for a single voltage. I don't have mine at hand to look. But if you used a prong adapter and a power supply rated ONLY for 110v you may have fried it even if you don't see any visible signs.

I am just using a 'prong' adapter along with the supplied AC power supply.
I just checked the power supply and its rated for 100V-240V 50/60Hz which covers European voltage settings.

Did it ever work? If not, since it was refurbished, you might have just gotten a bad player. I would get in contact with the person/store who sold it to you about a possible refund.

hi all, i have just recieved my player through ebay, apparently an ex demonstration model(short term), which is a uk h10 6gb. i'm having exactly the same problems, so its not that you've fried the player. mine was like this from the very first time i plugged the charger in, and got hot enough to make it uncomfortable to touch. again, the charge wont hold. i've sent an email to the fella i bought it off(apparently from a retail store....) would we be the only 2 people to ever have this problem? i doupt it, though what we do now, buggered if i know!

Hello all.
Boy, am I glad to have found this! I have a H10 5/6GB and have almost the exact same problem. The only difference is that mine overheats when playing and drops its charge very quickly. It doesn't overheat when I charge it. I got a new battery and it seems to be doing the same thing. This started happening one day for no reason. I have the right charger, right voltage, etc. Not sure if it's a reconditioned device but it seemed brand new when I got it (February 07). It was a present but I do know it was got on e-bay.
I have the new battery charging at the moment and it's as cool as it was out of the box. I would dearly love to know a way to sort this out. The player is working fine otherwise but I have a lot of music on it and I'd hate to lose it. I haven't dared open it up yet but there's no smell of burning out of it as you would expect it something had shorted.
Any clues!?!?!??

Regards,
Ciaran

Everything I have read here talks about recharging using the AC adapter. Have any of you tried recharging using the USB from the computer? Does it still overheat when charging using just a USB connection?

It doesn't appear to charge using the USB cable alone. The USB has to be plugged into the AC adapter. I've monitored the player over the last few days and it appears to discharge the battery even when the player is switched off. It does this with the new battery too. If the AC adapter is plugged into it but the battery is pulled it still seems to overheat. This suggests to me that it's a device problem and not a battery problem.

Sounds like a problem with the charging circuits within the player itself. If it were me I wouldn't try charging it any more. To much, and to many times with excessive heat build up within the player will start causing other components to fail. Need to get it repaired.

I picked up an immaculate H10 5GB from a trading site here in New Zealand that had exactly the same issue. Since it was sold as faulty, I didn't have any room for complaint. Mine got very hot in the bottom left corner whilst switched on and playing and, not surprisingly, the battery depleted very quickly due to the heat being generated. Apart from that, the player works perfectly. I reckon that the charging circuit got screwed somehow. In the end, I managed to get another faulty H10 (with a dodgy headphone jack - luckily that's on a separate daughter-board). I swapped the good mainboard with the overheating one and I now have an immaculate, perfectly functioning H10 5GB. I think something like that might be your only option to be honest.

So, my new battery arrived. It a 950 maH one. But it last only 45 minutes like the old, smaller (and original) battery. So, it's my player defective or I am I just bought a defective battery?
