Unhappy System Files Missing on my 5GB

The message: "To restore system files, connect H10 to recovery tool." I don't know what a recovery tool is, my computer is not acknowledging its connection to my H10, and none of the buttons work (in fact, the only way I can turn it off is to disconnect the battery). I am a wreck without my music: please help!

Go to iriver's website and download the firmware updater to update to the latest firmware. Also, you need to connect in UMS mode for the updater to work

ALSO: Please do a search next time, this has been asked a zillion times before

like i said, my computer is not recognizing the iriver and, therefore, when I open the firmware updater it will not move past the 2nd page because it does not know that my iriver is connected at all.

Are you connecting in UMS mode? That is the only way.

I don't know, how do I check?

Do you mean the emergency connection mode? Because, if so: yes I am.

If not: probably not. When I turn on the iriver without the USB cord, it says "UM 1.05" in the bottom left corner and "MTP Initialize" in the bottom right corner. You tell me.

(And if I'm not, then lemme know how to do it?)
Thanks a lot, again.

What is that for? I went there and it's all jibberjabber to me. What's device enumeration and how will this help? I mean, what's the problem and how's it being fixed?

I have a feeling im in exactly the same position as recklessjwalker.

I turn on my H10 6GB MTP and get a repetititive whirring sound from the hdd (thats the best i can describe it :S) then the system files missing msg.

I have done plenty of searches on this forum and read lots of threads and none of the fixes work because for me, and i assume recklessjwalker, we cant access the hdd of the H10 to update any firmware or fix any problems.

I have attempted to start in UMS mode but all this achieves is the MTP initialize screen with "emergency connect" across the top and then 9 times out of 10 it continues to the USB "connected screen"

I have heard some people suggest this as a broken hdd and i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on that? I sincerely hope it isnt as i dont have warranty

Thanks for any help

Chris

The device enumeration thread is for getting your computer to recognize it. If you see Emergency connect, and then USB connected, you are in UMS mode. It should show up in My Computer. If not, make sure it is plugged into a back USB slot, the AC adapter is plugged in, and when you go to Device Manager (right click in My Computer, and then go to Hardware, Device Manager) it doesnt show an error message under the USB heading.

Ok so assuming that the UMS thing is working, When i do it like that, it appears fine in device manager but nothing in my computer.

However if i unplug n plug it back in or just switch it on normally, i can get an icon in device manager and my computer.

When i double click on the icon in my computer im shown with a blank screen even when i select the option to show hidden files n folders. If i try and copy anything into the player i get the message "cannot copy BL_H10: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path name and file name"

BL_H10 is just a file i try and drag on from the desktop.

Not really getting any joy!

Try looking at the Device Enumeration thread. Chances are, the player isnt drawing enough power through the USB cord to have the computer recognize it. Make sure it isnt in a hub, plugged into the back of your computer, and the AC adapter is plugged in. You might want to try a different outlet, as sometimes that has done the trick, for people plugging it in to a big surge protector.

Yeah, you and i are in the exact same position to the detail. I haven't tried the device enumeration but I did try uninstalling it. The problem now is that the computer can't find the driver to reinstall it even though I've already downloaded it and it's sitting on my desktop.

Thumbs up Your solution might be here

Hi,

I encoutered the same problem as you and I've looked for a solution for a long time. And finally found the solution in this message :

Quote:
I could not send it in for repair so I had to open it.
1. You need a real tiny flat screwdriver.
Ok now you have to screw loose all the screws (6 In total, 2 on top and 4 behind the battery.
2. Now you have to take off the metall shield on the front. Just use the same screwdriver.
3. Now you have to screw loose 4 shiny screws. Now the device for volume and scrolling is loose. Careful pull it out, its easy to put it back in later.
4. The next step is to get to the harddisc. Now you have to take the whole thing out of it "shell". Now you see the harddisc. disconect it. (easy to set it back in later).
5. Now you have to take all the stickers on the harddisc off and two blue rubber things that protects the harddisc that sits on each side. You can put them back on later.
6. On the back on the harddisc there is a small hole.( You can see the harddisc "arm") Pull this "arm" all the way to the right with youre tiny screwdriver.
7. Before you put it back together you should check that the harddisc is working. Take the battery and put it on the tree golden taps and push the on button. You can hear it at once if it works. A smooth sound should appear and now you can whipe off all that sweat on youre forehead and put on a big smile instead.
8. Reassemble it, listen, love and take care of youre Iriver H10.
I did this 6 months ago and it has worked perfect ever since!
I've tried this myself and it worked, indeed it's a hardware problem
This is a tutorial with pictures in french that I have posted on a french forum :

I Hope it will work for you. If any problem (translation or something else) feel free to contact me.

See ya.

Be aware, some people that have tried this (this problem is that the arm on the HD somehow got stuck), reported a recurrence of their problem, as the HD began to fail. Not saying "don't go for it", just that it might come back. Hard-drives fail eventually, but the good news is you can follow this guide if you need to replace the HD.

I didn't knew about the recurrence of the problem. Neverthless, I think it remains the only solution for people like me with a H10 out of order and a warranty out of date.

On top of that it's a solution which worked and since I posted this message on a french forum. People posted message to say their H10 was up and running.

That's why I have titled my post "Solution MIGHT be here". I mean it's a risky operation and not to try if your H10 is under warranty.
