The message: "To restore system files, connect H10 to recovery tool." I don't know what a recovery tool is, my computer is not acknowledging its connection to my H10, and none of the buttons work (in fact, the only way I can turn it off is to disconnect the battery). I am a wreck without my music: please help!

like i said, my computer is not recognizing the iriver and, therefore, when I open the firmware updater it will not move past the 2nd page because it does not know that my iriver is connected at all.

I don't know, how do I check?
Do you mean the emergency connection mode? Because, if so: yes I am. If not: probably not. When I turn on the iriver without the USB cord, it says "UM 1.05" in the bottom left corner and "MTP Initialize" in the bottom right corner. You tell me. (And if I'm not, then lemme know how to do it?) Thanks a lot, again. |

I have a feeling im in exactly the same position as recklessjwalker.
I turn on my H10 6GB MTP and get a repetititive whirring sound from the hdd (thats the best i can describe it :S) then the system files missing msg. I have done plenty of searches on this forum and read lots of threads and none of the fixes work because for me, and i assume recklessjwalker, we cant access the hdd of the H10 to update any firmware or fix any problems. I have attempted to start in UMS mode but all this achieves is the MTP initialize screen with "emergency connect" across the top and then 9 times out of 10 it continues to the USB "connected screen" I have heard some people suggest this as a broken hdd and i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on that? I sincerely hope it isnt as i dont have warranty Thanks for any help Chris |

The device enumeration thread is for getting your computer to recognize it. If you see Emergency connect, and then USB connected, you are in UMS mode. It should show up in My Computer. If not, make sure it is plugged into a back USB slot, the AC adapter is plugged in, and when you go to Device Manager (right click in My Computer, and then go to Hardware, Device Manager) it doesnt show an error message under the USB heading.

Ok so assuming that the UMS thing is working, When i do it like that, it appears fine in device manager but nothing in my computer.
However if i unplug n plug it back in or just switch it on normally, i can get an icon in device manager and my computer. When i double click on the icon in my computer im shown with a blank screen even when i select the option to show hidden files n folders. If i try and copy anything into the player i get the message "cannot copy BL_H10: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path name and file name" BL_H10 is just a file i try and drag on from the desktop. Not really getting any joy! |

Try looking at the Device Enumeration thread. Chances are, the player isnt drawing enough power through the USB cord to have the computer recognize it. Make sure it isnt in a hub, plugged into the back of your computer, and the AC adapter is plugged in. You might want to try a different outlet, as sometimes that has done the trick, for people plugging it in to a big surge protector.

ive tried all the enumeration steps in that thread and have fully charged the iriver and tried all the steps u outlined to sort out power issues. Its not looking very hopeful :S
Any other possible steps? |

Yeah, you and i are in the exact same position to the detail. I haven't tried the device enumeration but I did try uninstalling it. The problem now is that the computer can't find the driver to reinstall it even though I've already downloaded it and it's sitting on my desktop.

Be aware, some people that have tried this (this problem is that the arm on the HD somehow got stuck), reported a recurrence of their problem, as the HD began to fail. Not saying "don't go for it", just that it might come back. Hard-drives fail eventually, but the good news is you can follow this guide if you need to replace the HD.

I didn't knew about the recurrence of the problem. Neverthless, I think it remains the only solution for people like me with a H10 out of order and a warranty out of date.
On top of that it's a solution which worked and since I posted this message on a french forum. People posted message to say their H10 was up and running. That's why I have titled my post "Solution MIGHT be here". I mean it's a risky operation and not to try if your H10 is under warranty. |
