Unhappy H10 20GB Scroll problem

Hi, can some kind soul point me in the direction of a thread to help me with the following issue with my h10 20gb European iriver

The touch pad scroll pad has lost all sensitivity and no longer functions correctly. I can't browse through the files on it or change volume. Nothing. I can listen to some songs if i play all but thats getting boring.

I couldn't find a thread on here with this issue .

I have recently upated the firmware to the latest iriver one, 3 weeks after this problem showed up. I changed to rockbox to see if I could fix the problem but no change.

Anybody?

Help, I don't want to have to get a new one or heaven help me an ipod.

Sounds like either your scroll pad is dieing, or the cable is disconnectedor something. Is your player still under warranty? If not, I would suggest opening the h10 up and checking the cable is still connected or something like that.

Is there a wire connecting the pad to the main board? Has anyone previous experience in doing this? I have obviously thought of doing this before but was hoping to get a bit of guidence from the experts here first. I wasn't certain it wasn't a software issue as the unit hasn't experienced any severe trauma in the past (just the firmware upgrade).

I had this problem when I got the scroll pad wet. It took 3-4 days before it dried enough to get it back to functionality

I don't think it got wet, and it's been a lot longer than a couple of days. More like 4-5 weeks now. How long is the warranty valid for on these units?

Failing that I may have to open it up and a)dry any moisture and b) check for wires c) replace the pad if possible.

Can you get spare parts for H10's anywhere?

And you could always send your h10 to the iriver store at misticriver http://store.misticriver.net/index.p...=index&cPath=7

I just got my iriver wet the other day, and now the touchpad only scrolls down, even when I push up/scroll up? Does this mean its broken permanently or should I wait out a few days until I'm sure its dry before I draw conclusions..?

Thanks a lot for the quick reply . I'll let it dry for a few days then try it again in that case.

You really want to make sure it is FULLY turned off. Depending on the model that means resetting it or removing the battery.

Well I left it off for a few days, and it still doesn't scroll up, using the scroll in any way scrolls it down.. I upgraded the firmware and that also didn't help, just reset the volume to the "20" default so I can kind of hear things playing.
I bought this off minidisc.com though so I think the warranty is only 6 months, and thats passed? How do you open the H10 anyway, after you unscrew it seems to be stuck together somehow - I stopped after that point in case I would damage it somehow; any tips?

I keep swearing I'm going to to a pictorial disassembly/rebuild tutorial for the h10, but I just don't have a digital camera yet...

The side panels are what is keeping it together. If you can find a very thin and strong plastic tool of some kind, you can work it around the edges slowly and eventually pop off the aluminum case halves.

Since you don't have the camera and have obviously already taken the case apart, can you describe (or maybe draw) what the pieces are that actually hold the two halves together and where are these pieces located. Are they like the typical "ramp shaped" tabs that hold plastic cases together? Maybe provide some approximate measurements along the case where we need to "pry" it a bit.

Thanks!
Gary

That's precisely what they look like. let me try and summarize separating the case:

1) 4 (four) T5 Torx screws (2 long ones on top, 2 short ones on bottom). Take 'em out. Top panel falls off.
2) With a tool like this (example), pry the top (display) half of the case off. 3 tabs on both sides hold it together and are approximately 1" apart.
3) Once loose, open case like a clamshell from bottom to top. Four cables connect display half and drive/battery half, so BE VERY CAREFUL when opening it up!!!!!!!!!!
4) Opened & laying out, you'll see 11 teeny tiny Phillip's head screws on the display half that need to be removed. Lay them out on a white towel in the same placement you remove them, since they actually have different sized threads. You don't need to remove either of the ribbon cables or the battery connector, just the ground lug with the O-ring connector. There is also a small brass "clip" on the upper-leftmost screw, remember to not lose that since it is also for grounding purposes.
5) (TRICKY PART!) With the pry tool or your fingernail, carefully remove the display board starting from the top (the end nearest the ribbon cable connections). You may have to lift the display half to a 90-degree angle to make it easier. It should lift out nicely.

You'll now notice that the scroll pad is an entirely separate piece held onto the display board by a very small 4-element ribbon cable. Removing it is very easy, just pull it out. Putting the new one in is a bit tougher, so I would suggest either tweezers or a pair of very fine needle-nosed pliers. Once that's done, reverse the steps and everything should go back together slick as a button!

Also, I'm in negotiations with my boss to borrow his digicam, so I may have something together real soon.

I too have the same problem, and used the photos in an earlier posting to take the device apart. I fouled my touch pad up by cleaning it with alcohol, and need to source a new pad.
I will try the iRiver site in UK to see if they sell the pads separately. Otherwise I dont know wher to source one.
Did you have any luck in getting one.

My friends Iriver h10 also seems to be having scroll problems (and his display is in Spanish!). I have the same unit but mine is fine... knock on wood.

After reading the note about how to take an Iriver apart, I got his player and opened it up. Once I disconnected the card with the scroll button and screen from his hard drive, I took my Iriver apart and hooked the card with the scroll and screen from my unit to his hard drive. Everything worked fine and the display was in English. I guess that confirms that the problem is somewhere in that side. I'm guessing it's the scroll button, but was afraid to just take my sccroll button off my card- it didn't look wasy to get on or off. I started getting nervous and feared having 2 non-working Irivers on my hand if I messed with mine too much.

Does anyone know where I can buy just the scroll part?

Can anyone tell me if a scroll button from a 5GB H10 would also work on the 20GB h10?
